Utilization of USSR Bases

Post by AW1Steve »

Has anyone used USSR bases by other allied troops , ships or aircraft? (Presupposing it's AFTER USSR activation). I'm wondering about experiences or pitfalls that allied players have faced. Thanks. [:)]

I am playing an Ironman game against the AI where Japan attacked the USSR in early '42. I found that the game engine would not allow me to "station" or homeport Allied ships in USSR Ports. Nor could I transfer non-Soviet aircraft there. I'm in the process of transferring aircraft there via ship, but not sure it this will work as they have not arrived yet.

There was another post on this

basically, you can't refuel/ rearm from USSR posts; so maybe plan to park AKEs/ AOs there after activation

You cannot use bases on USSR territory. Troops are not allowed to move there (you can unload them to sit in a hex though), planes are not allowed to fly, ships are not allowed to refuel.
But you can buy the bases that USSR captures in Manchukuo or such using PP given that you have Allied unit there. Pretty easy to bring 4Es close to Japan this way, see Lowpe vs obvert https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4252559

I tested this and Allied aircraft will base at USSR bases outside of USSR territory. Thus, you can load up USSR bases in Korea and Manchukuo, for instance, with USAAF aircraft. No need to use PP to change the base's HQ.

Correct. And in China.

Conditional on the game and goals of the game, I would personally recommend generally against doing it though. YMMV.[:)]

I've never been in a game or far enough where the USSR activated but I believe it was in 1942 when the Germans were advancing into the Caucasus that Stalin actually invited the US to send troops to help stem the tide (that seemed unstoppable at the time). Game decisions are game decisions but it is interesting know this beforehand just in case.

Stalin also let British Lancaster bombers stage to a base in the Archangel/Murmansk area so they could carry out their attack on the Tirpitz, but the airmen were not allowed to leave the base, were escorted everywhere and no one would talk to them about anything other than base facilities.
Seamen on convoys to Murmansk were treated with similar suspicion.

Perhaps the invitation was only BS from Stalin (since the US was still trying to surpass Romania as a military power in 1942) but a few sailors or airmen are a good deal easier to control than a whole bunch of soldiers fighting in the trenches alongside Russians and suffering the same fate.
