My bait ASW trap...21 points of ASW right now. Sub couldn't even target the 2 vp tanker. Tactic is probably too strong for AI play.

nice trap [&o]
in addition to a good, aggressive commander, do you replace individual captains? or is it overshoot?

also, any specific reason for the ship composition? I normally avoid mixing slow and fast ships, and the 19knt SCs can be more useful escorting fast TFs

How about putting it in a mined base hex, possibly with some ASW TFs ready to move into interdiction hexes in case the sub is only damaged?

I have avoided using mines, as I found them to be too powerful against the AI.

SRA

KB and a Heavy SAG and lots of invasion capable ships at Balikpapen. The KB may go hunt the Texas around Luzon, or it might shepherd the invasions of Makassar, Denpassar, and Kendari. Not sure yet, awaiting recon results. Dinah are resting at Balikpapen and will start flying in a day.

First tanker convoy (2 dms, 1 tanker, 11600 capacity) is loading fuel at Balikpapen. Will run to Cam Ranh Bay for now. Miri oil is also going to Cam Ranh Bay in one tanker task force. Pretty much all tankers are in port awaiting the completion of the ASW patrols. One oil tanker feeding Hokkaido and another working out of Fusan. The Oiler fleet that supported the 5th Carrier Division strike on Pearl was re-routed day 1 to Saipan, and now has arrived at Kwaj in the Marshalls to feed the thirsty Iboats and fleets there.

All the bases I am interested in right now...lots of them.

Torpedo bombers fly from Laoag hunting the Texas and Swayback... 4 squadrons of Nells and Betties, 2 on Naval attack, 2 on very low percentage search. Kind of important here, as it means the KB won't have to deal with Texas.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Iba at 78,75

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 22,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 31 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 40
G3M2 Nell x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M2 Nell: 13 damaged
G3M2 Nell: 1 destroyed by flak

Allied Ships
BB Texas
CA Swayback

Aircraft Attacking:
18 x G3M2 Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Type 91 Torpedo

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Iba at 78,75

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid detected at 71 NM, estimated altitude 23,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 28 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 40
G3M2 Nell x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M2 Nell: 8 damaged
G3M2 Nell: 1 destroyed by flak

So far you are taking a much different approach than I do; but you are also having some success that I rarely see. I usually lose far more ships to those d___ Dorniers, you've been relatively unscathed.

So, I am watching with great interest a good player and how you attack some of these "nuts". Andy created some real tough ones to crack …

I thought that the three inch rockets were two inch sticks of cordite for rocket fuel with a solid three inch spear point. They were used to punch holes in the subs hull so it could not dive. The five inch rockets had the explosive warhead.

Think of the firestorm if a Corsair dropped a load of napalm on a Japanese ship . . . [X(]

The three inch rocket was put on stringbags to be used against U-Boats. I presume that it was used on other aircraft. The nice thing, with the hole in the hull the U-boat became a poorly armed surface torpedo boat. [:D]

They didn't hit that many vehicles but surely vehicles abandoned because of the attacks should count as a kill.

I wonder if they ran out of our very low on fuel...or if was indeed felt to be a death trap?

From what I read, the people on the receiving end really, really, really did not like being on the receiving end of those. The vehicles just made them easier to spot and nice targets. So they probably decided to una$$ those vehicles and their vicinity. I also read where a German unit surrendered to some P-47s which called in a ground unit to collect their prisoners.
