Tichonovka Question

Korsun Pocket is a the second game using the award winning SSG Decisive Battles game engine. Korsun Pocket recreates the desperate German attempt to escape encirclement on the Russian Front early in 1944. The battle is a tense and exciting struggle, with neither side having a decisive advantage, as the Russians struggle to form the pocket, then try to resist successive German rescue efforts and last ditch attempts at breakout.

Tichonovka Question

Post by designer1 »

Playing as the Soviet, I have noticed that the troops that beging the game cut off in Tichonovka can, in fact receive replacements from Alert Points. Is this intentional? After all, they are surrounded...

Does the same apply to Axis troops in the Pocket once the pocket has formed?

I think that is an airfield and replacements can be flown in - at least that is the explaination for Korsun - if you control the airfield you can get replacements.

Prior to the battle the 1st Ukr front made a probe in force with these units subsequently cut off. This is the starting situation for the campaign.

Replacements here whilst curious could abstract many things. The issue is if you fail to take appropriate action there early (I'm not saying what that action should be!) that pocket will easily die even against a German AI and hence, replacements there will not be an issue.

Also whilst not suggesting this is THE right way to play, I tend to find it more urgent to send my replacements elsewhere in the 1st Ukr Front :-)

Good question designer. Don't forget that replacements aren't necesarily JUST troops, but represents the unit gaining better command and control, organisation, rest etc Under those circumstances it seems okay that they can be strengthened.

Tichonovka is a supply source. If you remove units from the map you can see the supply icon (only visible from the Allied side, not the Axis). The Korsun airfield area has one as well, as has Bastogne in the TAO scenario. This makes them real tough nuts to crack, especially as you may not realise they are supply sources until you see the step replacement in action.
