RE: Aug12.42 Christmas island (IO) invaded
If you still have Cocos Is, that's another reason Java could be a target. Cocos is not an offensive air platform but it does allow you to air search that area while you approach....very handy.
I would reinforce Cocos at a minimum to keep your options open

RE: Aug12.42 Christmas island (IO) invaded
I agree on trying to reinforce Cocos, but I think it is too early/ too risky to go after Java
I am afraid of going head on against waves after waves of LBAs. Because as soon as he spots the invasion fleet, he can rebase quite a lot of fighters and bombers ; there are plenty of level 4 bases in Java he can use; then there are all those cruisers at Singapore, waiting to ambush
Right now I can only bring 2 USN carriers and one crappy CVE. Trying to land so close to a LBA base is very risky, if by chance he torpedoes a fleet carrier, I would be in big trouble as there are few bases capable of repairing
I would at least need to wait until a few more CVEs arrive, even using the British doesn't add up too much; Hermes is too slow and the other ones are already withdrawn or very soon to be withdrawn
Maybe get a base that is close to it? something like Waigampoe or Bima

RE: Aug12.42 Christmas island (IO) invaded
With only 2 CV and 1 CVE, I can see the hesitancy on tackling Java, and the large airbases.....more than likely there is an Air HQ on the island, which means he can pull together torpedo bombers and Zeros pretty quickly.
Bima and Waingapoe are good targets if you have Broome/Derby area....easy to support from Australia

RE: Aug12.42 Christmas island (IO) invaded
Yes, and some of my "careful" comments included FOW... just in case in case some intelligence leaks [;)]
Operation Alligator has started; I will update on it in a few days/ turns, suffice to say it is more ambitious than going for Bima/ Waingapoe
Last turn, his naval search picked some unusual activity near the Torres strait; tomorrow he will likely find the Spanish armada [:)] you simply can't hide 200+ ships

Aug15.42
I would guess that he just now realized there is an invasion coming; as the last turn (2nd day of operations) was relatively uneventful:
- he didn't stop bombarding or bombing Palembang; which is good; I will start worrying when they go silent, as this will mean redeployment to DEI
- one enemy submarine intercepted and heavily damaged; I have 3 ASW TFs patrolling the strait, 2 of these are fleet destroyers (with 8 ASW)...
- many TF spotted, but all with low DL
- I started bombing Koepang, with good results; but airbase is far from closed, as I was using only 2Es to avoid raising alarms. Next turn I will unleash the heavies
- I think he didn't bite the diversion on the Indian ocean; but at least he saw the carrier; which was the main objective (I will expand later)
- As you can see, some radio volume on bases in the DEI and very heavy volume on Truk... is he moving his carriers?

Aug16.42 Heavies over Koepang
Another turn, another relatively uneventful day for the fleets
- I-33 attacked (and missed) the main Air TF; he didn't see the carriers but he got a very good idea on the TF composition as you can see
- I-3 hit an xAK, some supply and some 2nd line troops destroyed
- diversion forces at Andaman sea (R class BBs) somehow got too excited and went chasing rabbits; the only thing they found were Japanese LBAs; thanks god these were not torpedo armed; limited bomb damage only
- Koepang at 80% damage [:D] Heavies mopped the flow; details in the next thread

RE: Aug16.42 Heavies over Koepang
Darwin airbase is at level 8; will reach level 9 in a few days, maybe a week
this means that anything within 15 hexes of Darwin is at high risk of becoming a moon crater
up until last turn, I was only bombing with 2Es, and focus was on Saumlaki and Buna; I have now added Koepang and soon Ambon

Operation Alligator
Operation Alligator is the 1st Allied offensive of the war; it started a few days ago, on August 15.42
the name Alligator comes from the 1st objective identified, Kaimana. This base is still in Allied hands (was never invaded), and in the initial plan I was going to reinforce it with paratroops; to be then followed by engineers to build a base, etc. I dropped the idea, or better to say, I upgrade that idea to something bigger after realizing how quickly/ easily I lost Great Nicobar and Trinkar, once Japan decided to counter strike
So that was the original plan, but it was not the only option; as had been discussed, there were other possible targets; at the end of the day the main reason for choosing the eastern DEI was simply; overall base development or rather lack of it
Some other options:
Java: I didn't like the idea of going head on against multiple level 4 airbases, I am also not too confident on fighting Japanese IJA division at this point in the war
Pacific: I still lack the amphibious capability to properly invade island and atolls, besides an attack here won't impact Japan strategically
Burma/ Andaman: too close to LBAs, too close to well developed bases and easy for Japan to reinforce little gain
Sumatra: too far away from my bases, difficult to resupply, too close to Singapore

RE: Operation Alligator
The key reason I chose the eastern DEI is lack of infrastructure. Once I finish closing all airbases within Darwin range (15 hexes), there is little he can do with LBAs; only long range attacks, and these tend to be uncoordinated/ easier to destroy
This lack of infrastructure also infers lack of proper defenses; I still have limited amphibious assault capabilities, hence it is important that the places to be invaded are not too well defended, I think I can handle naval guards, SNLFs and base forces, I won't expect to find deeply entrenched divisions on the places I plan to take
So his main counter is going to be either mini KB or surface fleets; coming from Truk and Singapore. Looking the 4 cardinal points: I own the south, there is land on the east, he can only come from the north or from the west, it won't be easy to surprise me as I plan to have CAT cover on those directions

Aug18.42 Warspite ;(
a really bad day for the British!
the USN fleet on the other hand kept moving to their destination without issues
- BB Warspite sank [:(]
it was seriously damaged a few months ago in the Solomon Islands, it somehow managed to crawl back to Sydney for system repair (it is too big for the shipyard). Then it had to stop at Perth, as it had uncontrollable flooding.
A few days to repair, then went all the way to Diego Garcia, at 6knots! I set it for Diego Garcia because it simply refused to go directly to Capetown; kept turning back... cowards!
A few turns ago it finally managed to arrive to Diego Garcia for more emergency repairs
Last turn, after moving one hex on direction to Mombasa, it found SS I-27, who put 3 torpedoes on it and ended its story [:@]
- CV Formidable torpedoed [:@]
Formidable was acting as bait, part of the decoy fleet to draw forces away from the DEI, it had the additional task to show that the "British carriers" were near Ceylon (they aren't, only Formidable which is due to withdraw in 2 weeks).
Because he saw the carrier alone, he now knows or at least suspects that the other carriers are not in the Indian ocean [:@] They (Illustrious and Hermes) have joined their American cousins; I was hoping for a surprise
In the air phase, this TF found a ASW TF and sank two sub chaser [8|], but it also destroyed many Kates
- Silver Lining: the old, trash BBs Revenge and Resolution, acting as decoys on last turn, found 2 Japanese destroyers, they sank one, brand new Yugumo, which somehow was doing ASW near Great Nicobar (a waste really, there are many older, 2nd class destroyers that can be used instead)
- Submarines were on fire: lots of hits, but at the cost of severe damage; I think I-33 and RO-34 went down or at least are very damaged

I don't know if mini-KB will attempt to intercept; so far I have only seen submarines and a small tanker TF that was sent to the bottom
I can see a surface TF coming from Singapore, but it is still out of range, so not an immediate concern
And Ambon is a moon landscape, so nothing to worry from there

Aug19.42 carrier battle of Sorong: day1
Today the enemy carriers arrived; I was kind of expecting it, but regrettably they strike from long range while I keep strikes at maximum Wildcat F3 range (7 hexes) so not great results for the Allies, but nothing yet to worry about
He was able to hit a loaded xAK and put bombs on some screening cruisers (list of damaged ships TBD)

RE: Aug19.42 carrier battle of Sorong: day1
Someone might ask, after looking at the combat reports, why Carrier support unable to supply air cover??
and my answer would be the same reason why I have this ring of cruisers surrounding the carriers; in the scenario of high chances of carrier vs carrier battles, anything is expendable, including those troops, as long as the carriers survive or as long as I give the carriers the greatest chances of survive, all is good [;)]
list of damaged ships:
xAK St Essylt will sink next turn

RE: Aug19.42 carrier battle of Sorong: day2
Then the good guys' turn
I am not too happy about the results (edit: result were good, don't be a whiner!)
there was a loss of cohesion that killed too many dive bombers; but overall a victory

CVL Shoho torpedoed, heavy damage
CVL Ryujo torpedoed, heavy damage
survived:
CV Hiyo, Bomb hits 1
CVE Unyo and BB Kongo no damage

RE: Aug19.42 carrier battle of Sorong: day2
that was the carrier battle, but there were other stuff happening, like for example several strikes on the battleship TF
the battleships was sent to patrol the Ceram sea, it missed completely the enemy SCTF coming from Kendari, which almost reached an empty Sorong, as you can see from the map. This is a dangerous TF, as it is too close to the carriers
I sent the battleships knowing they were going to be harassed by LBAs, but I also knew there were no torpedoes, as places like Kendari and Ternate are underdeveloped... you can see they even used 60kg bombs, which typically means low supply... that was kind of my point about avoiding Java; at Java I would had faced a better prepared foe

what else happened:
- as said before, lots of air attacks against the BBs, minor damage
- Boela, Babo and Sorong captured; only Boela was contested, I killed 2 construction battalions
- amphibious assault TFs will withdraw, temporarily; until I deal with that gorilla TF

the battleships was sent to patrol the Ceram sea, it missed completely the enemy SCTF coming from Kendari, which almost reached an empty Sorong, as you can see from the map.

RE: Aug19.42 carrier battle of Sorong: day2
I would be happy with that result.....and his strike was really weak, not sure why but I think you got as good a result as you could hope for in that exchange.
Not a knockout blow on Oil, but there is follow-up potential from that spot for sure. And you did grab 45 centers with that move, every bit helps

RE: Aug19.42 carrier battle of Sorong: day2
Yes, after digesting the combat results, I agree it was a good outcome, that said, this is day2 of an on-going battle, so nothing is concluded yet
EDIT: I think a key reason for his lack of result was the heavy AA barrages, lots of ships, lots of AA guns, including recently upgraded Lexington (which got 5inch mk38s) and that AA beast that is the PoW (at 2,300+ points)
If this result holds, in other words, if I don't lose a carrier, then it would be a great trade off, 2 maybe 3 less flattops for Japan means that by the time the next batch or carriers arrive (Sangamons), I would have significant superiority and he might be very hesitant in trying to counter invasions, unless everything else is in his favor,
I definitively want to follow up, rather sooner than later, there is potential for additional landings once this battle settles. Next target is in the Celebes + Ambon; from there I can move to Borneo or PH later on
