Pe-3 on day missions

Post by thedoctorking »

When I set fighter squadrons equipped with Pe-3's to day missions, they don't seem to activate as escorts on ground attack missions even though they are supplied and fueled and within range. Does this have something to do with their designation as night fighters?

OK, I did a test of this. I switched a fighter squadron into Pe-3, set them on day missions, waited a turn, and launched an airfield strike at that base. The Pe-3's did not come up to fight in their own defense. I did a bunch of ground strike missions in the vicinity, no response from that squadron. Ended the turn, now playing as the Soviets, launched a bunch of ground strike and airfield attack missions from that base and the Pe-3 never activated.

Loaded up another game as the Axis and set a night fighter squadron to day missions (flying Ju88 C-6's), and they did activate in defense of their airfield, and also flew interception against a Soviet ground attack on a nearby hex. But when I switched over to the Axis and tried to launch attack missions from that base, they never activated.

I can only conclude that there is some either bug or undocumented feature that prevents air units equipped with planes historically used as night fighters from being assigned to escort day attack missions.

I also noticed that if the system automatically switches a squadron from day fighters into Pe-3's, it also automatically sets them to night missions. But if you switch them back manually to day fighters, it takes three turns to get them back because on one turn you have to put them on day mission (using 100% of their miles) and then on the next turn switch into the new plane type (again using 100% of miles). I don't know if this is a bug or a feature.

I think that if you are not going to allow night fighters to operate during the daytime, then you need to have a separate category of night fighter squadrons that can't be equipped with day fighters and vice versa.
