Very high unexplainable sortie count

In one of my PBEM games I've been flying about 350 sorties daily.
Suddenly the sortie count shot up to 1017 for no discernible reason.
When I checked my squads, nearly all fighter and fighter/bomber squads showed high fatigue levels. Most of them had been set at 10-20% CAP and I'd normally find a few of the pilots have high fatigue but this time virtually every pilot was fatigued at every base.
My opponent had flown bombers against one surface TF at Cooktown and my fighters at Cooktown scrambled to intercept. No other aggressive missions were flown by my opponent and I had not flown any other missions but CAP, training and scouting.
