Units retreating from line

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Units retreating from line

Post by Greippi123 »

Hey guys, trying WITW out again after a while and absolutely loving it.

I am currently playing GC with Germany in early 1945. Sometimes my units retreat 4-5 hexes after a breakthrough nearby. What is the mechanic at play here? TOEs and MPs are fine and there is no evidence of fighting. Is it some sort of AI commander trigger when he thinks the line is lost (I have pretty thin defences when this happens) and you are about to be encircled?

This is probably something obvious, thanks! :)

edit: adding rough pictures what happens, basically allied armour drived through and started trying to encircle Saarbruecken with no real fights. Are the HQs running and units are following suit? (yeah, checked, they got attacked and this is probably the reason? Makes sense).

I'm not entirely clear on what you say is happening, but it sounds like you are saying that some of your units are being moved by the computer. This shouldn't be happening. The only time a human player's units should be moved are if they are retreated or routed in combat, or if a depleted unit or HQ is alone in a hex and an enemy unit moves next to it. Other than that, the AI should not be moving your units. if this is happening, please send saves before the AI moves the units to 2by3@2by3games.com or attach them to a post in the tech support area. Thanks.

Greippi,

Are you talking about HQ's and already routed units moving when an Allied unit moves next to them? That's normal.

Thanks, I am being super confused as well about this honestly. Can't replicate it because autosaves got overwritten and everything worked fine when I ran turns again without moving (the front looked different originally after ground movement compared to first picture).

Probably just imagining things, but I distinctly remember during replay armour wrapping around my yellow army through a weak spot and attacking corps HQs in those 2 squares, and after the Allied turn my yellow army had teleported north-east with no real combat.

But I honestly think I just have bad memory and had shifted the army NE by rail/foot and troops left behind got obliterated. Not sure I would do this, I think I defended Trier and Saar strongly, but it's possible. It's the only explanation that makes sense given that units didn't suddenly start following retreating HQs after all.

I think it's unlikely to be a bug though, my error because I can't replicate, and it's whatever anyway. I was just puzzled about what happened, and obviously there is no ingame reason now. Thanks!

late game your army will collapse. Low TOE and dropping NM means your infantry in particular will often rout when beaten (not just retreat) due to additional lost elements from the combat. So you get this feeling that most of your army is simply scooped up and moved east in the Allied turn.

Basically routed units and HQs not stacked with a non-routed unit will displace when next to an allied unit

This kind of weird move happened to me in a game against the computer.
My divisions were at almost full strength and hold the line after the DDay.
When the allied initiated a small breakthrough, all my units in the area retreated 2 to 3 hex away without any fight.
Unfortunatly I don't have the save anymore but I pretty sure it is a rare bug.

It could be a bug, but probably is very rare. If anyone sees it again and has a save please send it to 2by3@2by3games.com. Thanks.

I was recently sent a save with some units being pushed back without being attacked. I confirmed that this bug was fixed with the 1.02.59 public beta update. Were the two of you using the official version, or the public beta version. Hopefully you were using the official version and your problems would be fixed with the 1.02.59. Please let us know. Thanks.
