The GA Rockets red glare

Post by tacticon »

I was searching through the forum for references to ground attack rockets. It seems like the the last major thread on them was back in 2009, when they were discussing adding them in. The data base now has the 5in and 4.5in Rockets, but no aircraft seem to be quipped with them. So does any one have experience modding them in? How did the rockets perform in the game against land and naval targets. Does someone have the mission filter values to change weapon loadouts for fighter aircraft.

There are 3inch rockets on some scenarios.

This came late war, but you can see them in use Lowpe's AAR "Beware the dorniers", as the scenario he is playing significantly beefs the Allies with late war weapons very early on

Rockets are abstracted in the LCI(R) bombardment landing ships and the Russian Artillery Units that use rockets (katushyas).
I think those larger rockets came into use late in 1945, perhaps on the Skyraiders or jet aircraft.

P-47s used both 4.5" and 5" rockets

I am playing the updated scenario001 and, looking at the aircraft database, the Beaufighters come with 3inch rockets.

BBFanboy, I am specifically looking at Air to Ground Rockets. I would like to know if there are any mods out there that tried them out.
Nomad, Yeah, there were a lot of fighers and some medium bombers that used rockets. Rockets were used extensively by both the British and the US in 44 and 45.
Yaab, I looking at the Beaufighters in scenario 001 ver 26b and I don't see the rockets. What ID number are you looking at? Can you post a screen shot?

The USN developed and used an 11.75 inch air to ground rocket called the "Tiny Tim". It was used in the Okinawa Campaign (and in Korea). It was delivered by various carrier aircraft and USN/USMC medium bombers. Supposedly it allowed the firing aircraft to avoid most Japanese (late) war flak.

Unlike the ASM-N-2 "Bat" it was an unguided rocket. Like the Bat it is not included in the data base.

I modded them in to the Downfall scenario, they work OK but arent a wonder weapon.
From memory they had a wrong weapon type, needed to be an AGM

Accuracy was pretty poor so I gave them a value of 1, I dont recall the range I allocated.

Aircraft which could use them were late war P38/47/P51, F6F5, F4U1D, Hurricane (not in scenario) Tempest, Beaufughter X or 21. IRL it was possible to fit them to medium/attack bombers as well.
