What does the number of colonized zones do? Do they increase number of minors and majors?

Yes, the number of colonized zones means how many cities are on the map, most of the time, they mean how many minors+majors are going to be on the map, but beware, as on the apocalypse phase sometimes cities are wiped out with nukes or diseases.
