Port Astrakhan

Post by BrianG »

I reiterate that this port should be made a supply source.

Reasons:

1 Once germans cut the rr on either side (to stalingard and toward baku), the whole area becomes a nothing zone to the Russians.

The rr now does not work, and the port is not giving port supply because an overland link exists to the Urals train line. Thus the port is useless until it is surrounded by the Germans. They have no incentive to surround.

Thus this area cannot support any sizable Russian force.

2. The port is in an inland Russian controlled sea. The Caspian. Unlike the Black sea, the Germans have no way of stopping sea transport unless they take the estuary near the port.

3. B/c Russians cannot operate in this port area, the Germans have no fear of flank attack as they head toward Baku. Or a flank attack upon the southeast area of Stalingrad. The mp's are too great even in summer clear conditions. Forget about winter.

4. It makes for better use of the map in the game. Without it, the game has much less strategy for 42 onward and is heavily tilted to the Germans benefit.

Thanks

Presumably the port hex itself is still a railhead supply source (or at least was until v1.11.x)?

The issue you are getting at is purely that the rails out from Astrakhan cannot efficiently transport supply without Astrkhan being a permanent supply source?

The system as it is now is WAD as the designers have said you cannot operate an efficient rail network from a port that is not connected to the rest of the rail network and have said why in the manual.
