How to learn this game?

Post by Searry »

The manual is huge and the information presented ingame seems lacking or I don't know where to click. For example, how do I project the needs of building projects, supply, etc? For example, I had lots of metal to start building some scavenging structures but it turned out they were impossible to finish. What is the starting build? Industry? I seemed to lack that. And metal? I also lacked food.

Check out Dastactic on youtube, he has some tutorial videos. First 1-4min is a quick rundown of what to do and if you want more he will explain more later.

Other than that play the game and have the manual in the browser, if something is unexplained search for it in the manual.

For building order it's common sense, industry is 500 metal for 3 turns. Do you have 1500 metal? If not then it's better to build a mine first. Farming, what's the temperature? What does it say in Reports - help - Planet Statistics Overview? At the bottom of the page you can see the recommended farming method. Also check the toen what kind of farming they do, if it's dome farming it's probably the thing to build.

Edit: Metal was for industry 2

I would take a look at the DasTactic videos and you can do these in any order:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGB6RkFB7ZmPoXDAaR8FbM3xujwMsDgEv

He talks A LOT, and is very THOROUGH [:D][&o]

And just play, one of the good things about it being turn based. You can take all the time you want.

Hey, I feel your pain! This is a complex game and the interface is, well, kind of a 1990s or early 2000s throwback. But the game is worth it. Keep clicking around on everything until you remember where to go to perform certain tasks, and yes, you absolutely must have the manual open and ready to search to find the particular thing you need help with. And save a LOT, because I at least find myself all too prone to misclicks! I wish this game had a "back" or delete order" button.

I find videos helpful for learning the way a game ought to be played and why it might be fun to play, but they're basically useless for remembering how to do anything detailed, such as raising the salaries of recruits and colonists in order to attract more to sign up. And a million other things. I wish that modern computer games weren't so dependent on them.

What is the starting build?

This is a difficult question to answer as it varies from planet to planet.

Generally look at your indicators on the left. Which ones are going UP and which are going DOWN? This will give you a good indication of what your build will be.

Priority one is to get rid of any Raiders or Minors that are within 4 hexes of your capital. Enemies near your cities cause problems (unrest to rise).

If food is going down, then you will need farms (and probably water to supply the farms).

After that you know you will need: Metal Mines, Industry, Offices and HQ (for BP points) and eventually Energy

Save money to Nationalize your Truck depot. Once you raise troops and go on an offensive, you will need trucks for logistics supply. Nationalizing the depot, doubles the available logistic points.

Call your Governor and change the zone orders to give the Private Sector a few credits (I usually go 3). This will jump start the private economy and they often build useful things like Light Industry.

As others mentioned, DAS's vids are very good. I spent the past month waiting for this game by watching all his playthroughs and beginner vids.

IMHO watch someone play on youtube to get general idea how game works and then you can fill in the blanks with manual when you play yourself.

How do you do this?...when I call my governor I get this: No Private Economy Slider

Thanks in advance

The "Public Budget" is the Private Economy slider.

I think the logic behind this awkward choice of words is that it is a budget for public subsidy of the private sector, hence public budget, but you're not the first to have been sent off track by this one.
