AI Logistics

Post by MonstersAbound »

So I was happily minding my own business when a minor raider regime decided to threaten me. This was fine because inbetween him and me where mountains... and when I say mountains I mean 7 hexes thick of high mountains and 4 hexes thick low mountains at the thinnest point.

So I blew him a raspberry safe in the knowledge that I was perfectly safe.

Turns out me and the Roman Republic learned the same lesson the hard way.

Now I'm being swarmed by stacks of infantry, although even then I thought no problem because using spies I've found their city and there are no roads into the mountains so therefore these units are without any supply lines, enjoy starving to death you psychopaths.

Problem is... having no food or ammo doesn't seem to be bothering them all that much. Infact they seem bright eyed and bushy tailed with moral in the 80's and, as far as I can tell, bugger all hit to their combat ability. I managed to get enough recon to spot a units supply and it was at 100.

So... do minor regimes not suffer from supply issues? Or does the AI in general just ignore it? What am I missing here...

Some minors don't need to worry about supply lines as they live off the land, raiders/slavers/most minors without a city are included in this.

Only unaligned lives off the land, Minor Regimes needs connection to a city the manual says.

Minors only ever need a land connection via friendly hexes to one of their cities. They do not actually need a logistical connection in the same way players and majors do. Minors that do not have cities do not require supply same as marauders.

This makes militant minors such as raiders, hunters and nomads quite dangerous as they can attack from any angle over any terrain so long as they have an uninterrupted chain of hexes to one of their cities.

Ah...

That would explain it, can't help but feel like that's a bit uneven,l but I guess getting the AI to use the same mechanics would be incredibly difficult.

Think I'll play on maps with less mountains in future.

I just bombed out every building in he main town of a major and they didn't seem to have any supply problems after 15 turns of my sieging it (I had all machine gun infantry so it took forever to take the it). So while the manual says majors need supply, I doubt it.

Why would the major have supply difficulties? Have you actually destroyed any facilities? What sort of planet are you playing on? Siwas are super generous when it comes to water and food generally so you won't easily be able to starve a settlement without obliterating all of its infrastructure, which you really do not want to do. What sort of artillery are you using? Note militia guns are all but useless. I mean they are useful in defensive battles but not as actual artillery. You need to design and raise proper guns. A proper regiment or even battalion of artillery can pretty much annihilate defences in a turn or two, to the point they may be too effective. Albeit this was fighting against farmer militias not majors.
