Replacement Settings

Post by Mark Breed »

OK, I appear to be yet again clueless on an issue with the game settings.

I thought that I had set the On Hand replacements at zero with various rates set to be supplied per turn. And, I set the replacements to be set for turns 3 through 104. So, it was my understanding that there would be nothing On Hand until turn 3. However, on turn 1, there were On Hand results.

So, what am I not understanding?

Thank you,
Mark

Looking at that you have losses so you must have moved and had combats. Moving causes equipment to be lost through wear and tear 10.4.7. They go back into the inventory. Combat causes some equipment to go back into the inventory also.

13.
Much of the equipment “lost” during combat
is not actually destroyed. Instead, it is considered
damaged or temporarily unserviceable. This
damaged equipment goes to the Replacement
Pool unless the owning unit is Out of Supply. In
the case of Air equipment, the fraction of damaged
equipment going to the Replacement Pool is
proportional to the owning unit’s Proficiency. Naval
equipment never goes to the Replacement Pool.

Opening the manual and doing a search for replacements will give you a complete view of everything regarding replacements. There's probably more than what I put in here.

Lobster,

Thank you. However, this is at the start of the scenario before anything has moved. The losses are due to pestilence, which I plan on addressing.

Your explanations do not account for there being 8 Military Polices Squads On-Hand when there are no reported losses. Nor, 170 Medium MG when there has only been one loss.

I have been reading the manual over and over again. Unfortunately, it does not always explain how the different features actually work. For example, Section 17.10, which explains the Inventory and Replacement Editor indicates "Begin Button: This is the first Turn in which the equipment will be added to the stockpile." And, as you can see from the Inventory and Replacement Briefing, the first turn is supposed to be turn 3, yet is is turn 1 of the playtest.

Below are my at start settings for the Inventory and Replacements.

Regards,
Mark

What is pestilence set at? My guess it's set at 3. Units that may have heavy equipment as part of their TOE have half the equipment loss 1.5 and it appears there is a small amount of randomness applied to the numbers. So while rifle squads are at around 3% medium machine guns are around 1.5%.

Here:
This value sets a percentage of equipment
lost to disease by every unit in the Force on every
Turn. Infantry, Horse Transport, and Cavalry
equipment is lost at this rate
, while all other types
of equipment are lost at half this rate. Within

Lobster,

I understand how pestilence works and I do not have a problem with it. I only pointed out the issues as to the On Hand versus the Losses as it appeared that you were linking pestilence and why the replacements were coming in before the Begin setting.

My question is why does the Inventory and Replacements Editor not work as described in the manual? I have it set to NOT add replacements until turn 3. The test scenario shows it adding them on turn 1. Is there something that I am overlooking?

So, unless your telling me that the pestilence setting overrides the Begin setting on the Inventory and Replacements Editor, I am not interested in discussing pestilence.

Thank you,
Mark

And I told you why replacements were being added. You really need to read the pestilence part of the manual more closely. Motorcycles are not infantry. Are not cavalry. Are not horse transport. Ergo, they receive only half pestilence and all should be sent to the replacement pool no matter how you want things to happen. Just because you don't want replacements to appear until turn 3 does not mean other factors will come into play to put them there. Is pestilence part of automatic book keeping? If the answer is yes then before the first turn even happens there is pestilence.

So anyway, there's what I think your answer is. Regardless of the fact that you don't want any replacements to appear until turn 3 there are other things at play that will void your plans. Even without factoring in pestilence, as soon as you start moving any units equipment will start showing up in your replacement pool before turn 3.

Good luck. [;)]

Lobster,

Thank you for the clarification.

If as you say, the moment you start moving forces or get into combat replacements will begin appearing, I have to ask, what is the purpose of the begin button?

To get technical, the equipment that is assigned are not replacements. So when they end up in the replacement pool they don't arrive there as replacements, rather as equipment that has, for some reason, become unassigned. Stragglers, broken down tanks, sick people, wounded. Your replacements that begin arriving when you assign them to are new recruits, new tanks, new aircraft or at least new to the scenario.

It still seems weird that the MP squads did not lose anything, but there are still 8 "replacements" that are available; and, the same with the Medium MGs only losing 1 unit and ending up with 170 "replacements" available. Where is the game grabbing those units from?

Lobster,

I owe you an apology. I turned off the pestilence and the replacement briefing On-Hand values stayed zero.

Still, it seems weird that the pestilence would impact the replacement editor settings; especially, when the units had zero losses reported (i.e. the MPs and several of the arty units).

The Evil Ed is truly the work of the devil.

Never used pestilence but I just did a little test. It would appear that it is not a sure thing. There will be some randomness thrown in. For example with pestilence set at 1% a unit in side A with 100 rifle squads lost one each turn with none going to the pool. Side B lost only one squad in three turns and nothing went to the pool. Meanwhile the MP squads in side A lost three MP squads in three turns and one went to replacements. Side B lost no MP squads.

Expect randomness. Machine Guns squads are not infantry so are treated like tanks or artillery.
