Short term Air Units.

Post by LGKMAS »

Oaky, here's the deal.
There are a number of air units that appear in Eastern USA that have only about 4 or so months before they have to be withdrawn. I am not talking about the HqSdns that get disbanded abort mid 42. There are even some bombers that appear for about a month before they disappear. I just use those as a training unit as I can't get them anywhere useful before they disappear. So I am talking about the units that have a life span of 4-6 months before withdrawal/disbandment.

Given the long time needed to ship them to the west coast and then ship them anywhere significant, does it make sense to ship them out or to leave them there training pilots? I presume that no training takes place while they are on ship?

So, say it is now Late May 42 and the P-39 Sdn that has appeared gets disbanded/withdrawn in oct 42. That means I won't be able to get them to the South Pacific or South West pacific until early/late July, depending on the speed of the Air tpt Tf and the route taken. they get to Brisbane and have to start training up from a 29 base. I would be lucky if they got to a base of 50 in the two months that I have them for.

Should I just leave them there in the eastern USA training up pilots for later Sdns or should I send them to the front line? I might add I don't yet feel under pressure to plug gaps in the air units on the front line but that may happen.

And I know it all depends on the situation but what do people think? Train in place of ship out?

Wrt last paragraph, view air units as planes not pilots. You can always ship the group devoid of pilots (in fact it is preferrable to do so) then pull in the pilots you need from the reserve/pool. Other than that all up to you. Depends on how you training is, if there are any pressing needs on the front etc. If the group has full complement of planes and withdraws for quite some time afterwards it might be useful to get those planes used, because you will not get them in the pools after withdrawal
Try to upgrade away whatever modern airframes too if you are withdrawing the unit
