January 15th, 1942 major events:

-an xAKL encounters a large CV TF near Port Moresby, consisting of carriers Kaga, Hiryu, Soryu, Zuiho, CS Chiyoda and BB Kirishima
-SS Argonaut gets a shot at CV Hiryu, missing with 4 torpedoes
-BBs bombard Manila now that Bataan is open
-3 divisions make an attack at Chushien, with 1:2 odds but bringing forts down to 1
-Noumea holds yet against another shock attack. The Japanese are banzaing furiously

January 16th, 1942 major events:

-I-15 sinks an xAKL off Port Moresby
-BBs Ise, Yamashiro and Fuso bombard Manila. There is for sure AKE support nearby
-S-40 gets sunk in Singapore during a bombing raid while refueling
-DD Akatsuki hits a mine at Manila, and lists as being sunk
-An SNLF unit lands at Koumac
-Japanese capture Kolaka, the base NW of Kendari pushing the remaining Dutch units into the jungle

-Noumea holds against an unbelievable attack. I don't think it will hold off for any longer. There is simply NO MORE fighting power left. It must be due to the fact that the Japanese are so worn down of almost a week of continuous attacks on the base:

Ground combat at Noumea (115,160)

Overuse of shock attacks is one of the mistakes that new players often make. They see the X2 multiplier for the SA but they don't pay enough attention to how much fatigue and disruption their troops suffer if they don't succeed. Back to back SAs are usually unsuccessful. The rule is: grind with bombardments, bombing and deliberate attacks, then SA when it is clear the enemy is heavily disrupted and suffers a combat malus or three. Your opponent is showing a disruption malus. If he gets a supply malus too, he may end up losing a lot more troops than you.

Frequent shock attacks by decent armoured units work great when the enemy does not have much artillery nor anti-tank capabilities. [:D] Other ground units just make a deliberate or a bombardment attack to support. But if you do shock attack with armoured units, strip out any soft devices.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

In my defense, shock attacks are not performed by all units at the same time, what really happens is the refusal to surrender, they do not know the benefits of sake

In previous turns, I attack the port and the airfield with + - 50 Lb planes, and two Tfs in coastal bombardment, and on the turn of the attack, bombard it with 3CA + DD and air attacks on the troops.

Yes, not a lot of damage despite several weeks of (more or less) continuous bombardment runs. Also there were only a few engineers at Palembang, they are pretty scarce in to begin with (in this scenario). Singapore has a lot but they are scattered over so many LCUs that it's hard to really get too many into Palembang.

Welcome to February 1942! The war has moved on, and I'm sure the fall of Luzon in mid-January will make things very, very tough going forward. A storm is gathering, so to say. Most of the events for this period focus around a catastrophe in Burma where long ranged bombers wreck havoc on shipping and surface raids in various places on the map.

January 26th, 1942 major events:

-BB Fuso, CAs Atago and Chokai spotted SE of Ternate where they sink an xAKL
-SS Swordfish gets a shot at BB Ise with 4 torps, missing
-CA Maya sinks an xAKL east of Manado
-I-25 sinks an xAKL in a surface duel off Cairns
-In China a Japanese tank regiment bombed east of Lanchow with some success, destroying/disabling 18 vehicles
-Betties torpedo and sink 2 xAK at Rangoon and a third, later scuttled
-Japanese advance in Sumatra to the west coast and north, pushing remaining Dutch out of their way

January 27th, 1942 major events:

-BB Ise and CA Suzuya sink an xAKL near Balikpapan
-SS O20 puts a torp into an xAK off Makassar
-Betties from Bangkok sink or damage 10xAK/xAKLs near Ramree island, effectively shutting down operations
-One or two CVE sighted at the Aleutians, where Kates attempted to torpedo CL Trenton but missed

January 28th, 1942 major events:

-SS Ro62 sinks an xAKL off Townsville
-Nells/Betties sink 7 HDML and an AMc in Batavia harbor

January 29th, 1942 major events:

-3 Japanese DDs sink 4 xAKL at Tjilatjap
-Further 8 vehicle losses inflicted by bombing east of Lanchow

January 30th, 1942 major events:

-CA Maya and CL Tatsuta raiding west of New Zealand (based out of Noumea, where allies managed to leave a sizable stock of fuel) run into an (empty) cargo TF, sinking 2 American DDs and 4 xAKLs. Still, Japanese will need to resupply this base sooner or later
-CL Sumatra and a DD attempts to night intercept the 3 Japanese DDs at Tjilatjap, but only 1 shell hit scored on both sides and contact broke off
-A major night bombing raid launched on Palembang oil and airfield facilities with every available aircraft that can carry a bomb (including Catalinas), scoring only a few hits there. Though newly obtained recon indicates that Palembang port and airfield facilities are still quite heavily damaged. Most aircraft strayed in the night
-Betties score a few bomb hits on 2 SS in Soerabaja repair yard
-The attack on Chushien resumes with 2 divisions:

Ground combat at Chuhsien (88,56)

The beginning of February is marked by a carrier clash. Allied air search had been following 3 IJN (Akagi, Shokaku and Zuikaku) carriers loitering north of New Caledonia for almost a week and an ambush attempt was made with unspotted US carriers. Shokaku takes a bomb hit, while Saratoga takes a torpedo. Other results of the fight result in a large number of bombers shot down on both sides. Poor performance of bombers and unexpected carrier movements resulted in lackluster and inconclusive results for the allied side. At least 60 bombers were shot down on both sides over the 2 day clashes. In retrospect, the ambush attempt was worth a shot and the idea was to eliminate the range advantage of Japanese aircraft by rushing the unspotted US carriers in the night right next to the Japanese carriers, allowing the short ranged Devastators to fly as well and take advantage of the local numerical allied superiority. This never materialized.

Elsewhere, Japanese troops land on Java with little opposition. Also large formations spotted heading to Burma from northern Thailand. Also the RAF carries the heavy burden in protecting a last ditch effort to dump supplies to Rangoon, which proves to be such a fight of attrition the British can’t win. US Army fighters have not yet arrived to India in numbers.

In China, a massive battle for the encirclement of Nanyang seems to be erupting, NW of Nanyang.

RE: splashell (A) vs. gervabit

Post by Q-Ball »

If I follow all of that, I think you came out ahead; looks like you sank a couple CAs and AKEs, and it only cost you planes and CV damage. You also let your opponent know you can be aggressive with your CVs.

It's risky, though, bringing them out with TBDs and Buffalos!
