Gauss and/or gas powered small arms

These guns cost alot of research but the numbers dont seem to be much better then the automatic rifle. Is there some other reason they are better? I did not see anything in the manual.

A screenshot of the selection in the designer would help [:)]

But for Gas Powered I know one thing: Low Ammo Consumption.
