EV ambient wind mod now with OPTIONAL Paris Texas mod

Post by eddyvegas »

I'm not sure why I keep doing this stuff. But I requested on the forum some ambient wind as background sound while playing. Then it hit me I could just hack the game. So I did.

THIS MOD WILL DELETE THE IN-GAME MUSIC. THERE IS NO UNINSTALL, FILE TOO BIG. I HIGHLY SUGGEST MAKING A COPY OF YOUR SHADOWSOUND FOLDER BEFORE INSTALLING.

After installing, turning the music on (I suggest 20%) will now provide an ambient wind soundtrack to your game.

How I did it: there is one track that is 18:38 in length, that's the wind. All the other tunes have been replaced with 2 seconds of silence.

Now, what does it sound like? Let me reassure you there is a lot of silence. The wind comes in very softly then fades. It comes back after a while.

I also sampled some synth sounds from the in-game music and sprinkled them in every 3rd or 4th wind. This kind of bumps things up every once in a great while.

The whole thing is very subtle. I've been listening to it and I think it adds to the game.

But I need some testers to tell me yea or nay. I can understand if it's a nay, I haven't really decided myself.

Here is a version with no music and with the wind a bit more frequent. I like this better:

(EDIT)

DO NOT DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE NOT USING THE WIND MOD.

So if you've been using my wind mod, you've probably noticed those eerie vocals that fade in from time to time. Well, what I've done is replace them with some slide guitar and a pad synth. They are mixed at the same volume the vocals were, so they will not be too jarring. I can't really playtest since the triggers are random, but they sound fine to me the few times I've heard them.

I suggest downloading them, then have a listen to 3 or 4 before you decide to install. -Eddy

THIS MOD WILL DELETE THE IN-GAME MUSIC. THERE IS NO UNINSTALL, FILE TOO BIG. I HIGHLY SUGGEST MAKING A COPY OF YOUR SHADOWSOUND FOLDER BEFORE INSTALLING.

After installing, turning the music on (I suggest 30%) will now provide an ambient wind soundtrack to your game.

OK sorry there was still 1 tune on there. It's fixed now.

It doesn't convince me, the beginning and the end of the sound of wind is very abrupt, perhaps I would like more if it were softer. The spaces of silence are very long in my opinion, thanks anyway

No that's good feedback. I notice 1 or 2 winds that aren't great as well. Try turning music down to 20%, my 30% suggestion didn't have enough playtesting.

Most interesting is that you'd like more wind and less silence. Originally I thought that wouldn't be great when going to different screens doing management stuff like reassigning leaders, playing cards, etc.

Well thanks for trying it.

Glad ya like it.

Funny - once you get rid of the music, there are these weird vocals that fade in and out that I'm pretty sure you would never hear otherwise.

I might get the synth out and see what I can do with those.

Playing 1.04+ with it, it’s good so far, thanks !

Nice ambient, brings me to the idea that with little modding this could be turned into a US postnuke wasteland setting. Not certainly an Idea I am looking for but might be interesting for others.

OK, I've got a dozen hours of play under my belt with the slide guitar bits, and I gotta admit, it sounds OK, certainly better than the singing, but it's not really adding to the game, making the game better, like I hoped. I have another idea for it.

Update - so I have these orchestral chimes in there in place of the voice and THEY WILL NOT PLAY and I have no idea why. Putting the slide guitar worked immediately.

(edit) I got them to work. Playtesting now.

(edit 2) Well, the chimes are not adding anything to the game either. I think the random triggering precludes using it to enhance anything. It might not trigger for 5 minutes, then you'll get 2 in the space of a minute. And you could be in a sub-sub menu, or fighting a big war, when it does. So I'm giving up.
