Magicmissile (Allied) vs Flaviusx (Axis) Flaviusx welcome

Post by MagicMissile »

Hello, Back again with more AARs. This will be my 14 and 15th PBEM and I think it will be my last for a while. There are other games to play out there so will probably take a break after this. So the idea is to make a much more detailed AAR than the other ones share how I like to do things in more detail. Anyone is free to comment and say you are such a noob or you are a genius as you feel like [:)].

As the allied one is obviously a lot more reactive. I have no idea what Flaviusx have in mind. I do think he thinks a little bit like me and I am guessing he wants to try to test the balance situation on the eastern front so I think he will not go for Sealion but who knows I guess we will see [:)]. In general the goal is of course to inflict as much damage as possible on the Germans to make Barbarossa as weak as possible.

In general I try to build up a decent sized UK army to stop ideas for Sealion that includes generally a 2nd arm corps.
For the French I also usually build a arm corps but in all honesty I am not sure if I have gotten the value from it in previous games so not sure what to do in this one.

September 1 1939 Poland

This is before my move. There was nothing I could do really. I did counterattack a German inf div and threw it over the Vistula and circled the wagons around Warsaw. Flaviusx used both arm corps in his attack (2nd one in Poznan) so a slight difference to my invasion.

In the west the allies moved around a bit. Germany took Luxemburg so no chance to grab it this time.

Put French and British airforce in a better position to defend the Netherlands
started to exchange the 50 morale units with 40 morale units in the maginot line. Will have 20 strength 40 morale corps there eventually. I don´t dare go down to divisions they can be moved even though Flaviusx have put divisions on his side of the line.
Moved a divison to Alger and moved Alger and Morocco corps back to France.
Disbanded 3 French Hqs.
Set all French units to garrison mode.
Set replacements for both UK and France to 0 and no production this turn.
German subs in South atlantic tried to sink them with a CV but no success.

Some interesting things this turn.

Poland manage to hold on another turn.

Last turn I sent out a British submarine to the west coast of Sweden within interception range of Copenhagen. The Germans invaded Denmark and sent the inf div to invade Copenhagen. Doing the British navy proud the submarine sank the invading force. The German navy wanted revenge and used the intercepting mechanic against the sub. The sub intercepted the German navy and lost ofc and lost 2 strength factors. But two can play that game [:)]. I didnt have much navy nearby but I sent what I had. I was not in range to attack myself but the German obliged the British navy and intercepted it. In the ensuing battle the British won 10-7 including sinking the Scharnhorst while not losing any ships itself. The Germans also intercepted a small French fleet and there the Germans won 2-0 but of course French ships not worth that much.

France continued exchanging garrisons in the maginot line and built the armoured corps after all but I still have some doubts about it. Replacement still 0 for UK and France.

The Luftwaffe took a detour to Denmark and chased the British navy. They found it and inflicted 4 hits but luckily did not sink any ship. That detour might possible have saved The Netherlands which survives the first turn. With bad weather incoming maybe might live a bit longer. I did not send any French corps to Amsterdam so scared of air interdiction nowadays [:)].

France continue rearrange some forces. England builds a Arm corps and the French build a inf corps. Replacements still on 0.

Netherlands fights on. Otherwise not much happening. I am thinking if there is a heavy rain turn I might send a corps to Rotterdam as it is hard to dislodge and can make a German attack on Belgium harder to do.

One thing I usually do I put the British Escort fighter on no replacement I let it fight and later disband it.

Netherlands still hangs on. Lots of air combat with the Allies coming up a bit short but dealing a fair amount of damage to the Germans.

Battle of the Atlantic goes soso not a single subfactor sunk yet.

The British builds a fighter. France build a inf corps.

End 39

Skipped turns here as well not much going on except the seas. German submarines are doing really well. 35 merchants and 3 escorts for 1 sub factor. Never seen anything like it. So after building 1 arm 4 inf corps and 1 interceptor England now must build some escorts and merchants possibly. As a small compensation the Allies have sunk a fair amount of merchants going up and down the Norwegian coast and in genreral this game is a bit more bloody compared to the other one.

The French are built out so now the rest of production will be used to build up the units to full strength.

March 40

The Axis are a bit fortunate with the weather and get not 1 but 2 cold turns in March. taking out Belgium and getting into France. The British try to counterattack and throw the Germans out of France but fails. Together with big losses in the Atlantic not the best of starts but early days yet[:)].

End of May 1940

After 3 cold turns in March April and no rain in May France is not doing too well. The British start to head for the ports and I expect Paris to fall 2nd turn of June. Again the gain from the French Armcorps pretty minor and it has now shattered so really not sure if it is worth building. Only happy news is that our carrier group finally finds and sinks 4 sub factors.

June 40

Its over for France as expected. Flaviusx now have many different opportunities. Go for Gibraltar, invade England or just go for the mediterranean and Greece. We will see what it will be. I have spotted 2 paratroopers, I have lost a lot of Escorts and Merchants which I have had to replace so an invasion of England is not out of the question Id say. But I don´t think invasion 40 and Barbarossa 41 is that easy to pull off you will still take a lot of losses in England.

Not sure if this is working as intended. I lost one British corps in France. It was rain in the ocean but clear on land but the port of Le havre hex was rain seems like ocean weather had priority over land weather so my corps couldnt reach the port and ended up in a German prison camp [:)].

End of the Fench campaign

Germany accepts France surrender. Churchill shivers of fear in London but after seeing most Luftwaffe head to the Mediterranean at least for the moment he feels a bit safer but now the fear moves to Moscow.

The axis have taken Greece and Vichy France and North Africa. It takes a lot of garrisons but on the other hand there are 2 vp hexes there. I am tempted to do the same in my axis game but I am a bit low on landing ships after the Greece campaign so might have to wait or skip it.

Got the 5 escorts from the US so now escort levels are fine havent seen the subs for quite some time now.

Egypt and England defences looks fine so hopefully they will hold. Malta will be under attack and after that? I guess Russia but maybe Spain/Gibraltar or England is not completely off the table. Guess we will see [:)].

Nothing going on really.

I have not seen any subs for a long time even though the Battle of the Atlantic started so well for the Axis.

I put 6 AA on Malta and the axis didnt even try to take it. Not sure if it was the AA or if Flaviusx just didnt want to take it.

As can maybe barely be seen on the screen shot Germany will most likely paradrop Norway as soon as the weather allows it.

Germany have moved away the airforce from the coast of France. So maybe it is time to shift to more offensive building for the UK. So that in the spring summer of 41 UK can start to go on the offensive somewhere. The whole of North Africa is waiting to be reclaimed [:)].
