Heads up: great UV related reading material

Post by Oleg Mastruko »

GREAT article at J-aircraft.com:

http://www.j-aircraft.com/research/rdun ... u_main.htm

Lotsa UV related stuff there, photos etc... It follows the history of Japanese base at Tuluvu (Cape Gloucester for Allies) in GREAT detail. Reading such detailed history really drives home the fact that UV managed to put incredible amount of historic data and many many details into enjoyable PC game format - units, CAP operations, fast transports, patrols, base building... etc etc MANY things falling right at their place, where they belong, in manageable and enjoyable format on the screen of your PC!

I haven't read it to the end, but "fans" and "haters" of B17 will surely note B17 scoring a hit and damaging near miss on fast-transport destroyers at the very beginning of the narative... (remember endless discussions re this here on the board?)

Thanks to author for this GREAT article and thanks again to developers for producing such fine historical game as UV!

PS. Humorous note: Allies called the place Cape Gloucester, for Japanese it was Tuluvu, and in UV it is Sag Sag (western tip of New Britain island). As the author rightly observes "in one of those quirks that makes the study of history both difficult and interesting, the Japanese often used the term “Dampier Straight” to refer to both Vitiaz and Dampier Straights while many Allied sources use “Vitiaz Straight” to refer to both passages". (Of course, it should be 'strait' not 'straight')

Thanks Oleg for a great reference that really does backup the hard work done by Matrix! It's good to know the fate of that bedeviling sub; the Argonaut. As an IJN player I am pleased to find another plug for the "Tony" fighter. Defensive only, yes, but by the time I will get her; I will be on the defensive. I can't wait for WITP!

Thanks Oleg, very interesting!

The article mentions that the Japanese did discover a small, overgrown runway built by the Australians (presumably before the war) at Cape Cloucester. This triggered the idea to create a scenario mod in UV with a size 1 airbase at Sag-Sag with 100% runway damage, so it can't be used unless repaired by engineers. Well, in a test against the AI in 'Both Computer' mode I just discovered that each day the runway damage is repaired at a rate of 10%, although there are no units present at the base. AI cheating again...
