Railheads and stations

Post by Majick »

Hi,

In the middle of several wars I have been lucky enough to capture three new zones over a short space of time. To ensure supply I have pushed railroads out to the cities. But I've found myself in the ridiculous situation of building both a railhead and a station simultaneously, because the railhead will appear 1 turn earlier.

My question is, once I have both a railhead and a station in the same hex, does keeping the railhead provide any benefit at all or should I just close it?

I've done the same and explored the same secondary question.

In favour of keep:

its cheap to run
you get a bit of rail cap

In favour of ditch:

even though cheap it does cost manpower etc to run. So if you have any shortages you get more trains/input off the full station.
if you have just taken a zone, it maybe short of workers (at least thats been my experience).

So I am tending to dual build and later on disband the rail heads, same with supply depots. By mid game I can afford to put in a truck station so I might as well allocate my resources to that.

Having said this, am still working out solutions to various logistic crises, and do have a tendency to the brute force/mass type of solution [;)]

I haven't tried this, but one effect of having both may be that once you get high-speed rail, you can close the rail station and still receive rail benefits while you are waiting for the rail station to close and then to build your high-speed rail station.
