Total surprise until the fleet reaches Paramushiro-jima search arcs, but then the IJN is far away in Manila or Soerabaja; can't arrive in time, I have to deal with LBAs, and there might be some losses, but I would land and easily capture 2 lightly defended or empty bases, maybe Onnekotan-jima and Shimushiri-jima
But then what? as soon as the carriers leave, the LBAs will come, in big numbers; even if I can build them to level 7 airbases, there is little else I can do until I start getting the B-29s

RE: Nov12.42: India entanglement
The threat of what you can do is what would worry the Japanese. After he reacts to you there, you have already left and other units are ready to attack elsewhere. Keep the IJN fleet moving. With decent defences and AAA in the Kuriles, it could be difficult and costly for the Japanese to dislodge them. It would also take fuel which you are already threatening the fuel sources in the DEI.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

RE: Nov12.42: India entanglement
Japan is really starved for troops in 1943. They really need the IJN Fleets to secure quite a lot of property, until the ground and AA reinforcements start arriving in early 1944.
You tied up a ton of troops at Palembang for a long time.
The more active fronts Japan has to worry about, the worse off they will be. If you allow Japan to concentrate in any one area and neglect the rest, the odds are likely he will eventually win...but the cost is a paper thin perimeter.

Nov13.42: Dili captured, Endeh close to defeat
Thanks a lot, I will definitively think about that
November 13.42
- Dili captured, which means I now have another place to build a nice level 9 airfield. More important, a base to put my dive and torpedo bombers to cover the invasion of Koepang. Once I have Koepang and Dili, I will control all that area and will make it more difficult to get me evicted from the Celebes
- Endeh survived another turn, but I can see the end coming soon, I send paratroops to reiforce the Australians, but looks like they are all doomed
- Saumlaki, Japanese survivors are really hard to kill, but I am not in a hurry now that the base is captured

RE: Nov12.42: Finally.. Chuyo sank
I can testify to that as I have done just that without expanding a single naval shipyard, Taiho in Feb 43 and first two Unryus class by May 43 with Musashi on time.

thanks a lot, I would then protect my carriers (I mean Lexington and some little CVEs[:(]) until ~August 43, when I will have 8 fleet/ light carriers + lots of CVEs

Have the landing force consist of a couple of Marine Def Battalions and have the rest made up of engineers, AA and supply.
If there's only Paramushiro to deal with, then you can keep that suppressed with bombardment runs from the Aleutians.
Be ambitions and take as many of the small bases and dot hexes as you can. Japan really can't suppress them all sifficently to prevent you building up.
Either way is a win-win for you - either Japan has to mount a massive response to throw you back (and thus diverts assets from elsewhere) or you get bases close to Japanese industry.

Here is India, and I don't know what to do with it
Send the bulk of the fleet elsewhere, not much use for it in the Indian Ocean. Can revisit this theatre in 1944 when there's more of everything to go around.
On land, I'd forget about Myitkyina - lots of jungle and terrible terrain and supply, and taking it doesn't get you much beyond what holding Ledo already does.
Instead, I'd advocate a limited offensive down the Arrakan to take Ramree Island, marching from Akyab. The terrain is still terrible, and you don't even need to be serious about it. This move will bring you more advantages than Myitkyina, as:
1. It will force Japanese units off the Burmese rail line, making redeployment harder
2. Capture of Ramree gives you a great potential airbase in range of Rangoon, and easily supplied by sea via coastal traffic from Calcutta.
3. You'll draw Japanese units away from defending other parts of Burma, so in 1944 you can roll a large army south from Imphal and burst onto the central plains of Burma and find the IJA units out of position defending the Arrakan.
In the air, I'd conserve your strength. Nothing to be gained from an offensive air campaign currently. If recon spots IJA units in clear terrain with no CAP or flak, then bomb them. Otherwise I'd sit and train more fighter pilots and have the bombers help lug supply to China.
RE: Nov12.42: India entanglement
Wait until the Commonwealth units get their upgrades in 1944. Look in the database to see the increases in firepower for the infantry. I agree with Ramree being taken. Then, hold until relieved unless something is given to you. Have massive preparation for your primary targets, then your second wave of targets plus some for other bases that you might be able to grab if they open up.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

RE: Nov12.42: India entanglement
I finally caught up with this AAR. Very exciting stuff! Thanks for the entertainment.
I also thought of Ramree when you mentioned you didn't know what to do in Burma. You could send troops down from Akyab. You get a lot of AA in that theater--don't forget to bring a lot with you as you head down the coast. I also found you need to set up Calcutta to Akyab supply convoys as the coastal road doesn't cut it if a lot of units are in Akyab or beyond. If you are already doing that and he isn't attempting to interdict the convoys, then all the better. If he doesn't react to your Ramree move, then you can continue down to Rangoon once the supply to Ramree is secure.
Cheers,
CB

Dec2.42: Waingapoe lost
thanks a lot
December 2.42
Long time!
not a lot happened from mid November; I was able to capture and consolidate Dili while he successfully took back Flores and Soemba
I am surprised he has not tried to reinforce Makassar, as my position in south Celebes is precarious, with no possibility to resupply other than submarine or air transports; in the meantime he is bombing daily (some naval bombardments too) which destroys supply.
This means I just have enough supply to avoid starvation, but not enough for anything else. And that from December I will need to use "working torpedo" submarines because I decided to prioritize Dec42 upgrades for fleet submarines. PPI radar is really important, and from January 43 I will get a little less issues with torpedoes.
Fleet wise, it has recovered from October/ November battles, and I have Hermes + 4 CVEs ready; that is not enough against "the reformed KB" lol, but I think it can be enough as long as I remain close to an airbase
This means that Koepang will be invaded soon

Dec3.42: Rape of Samarinda
Last turn I wanted to unleash the heavies, recently rebased at Manado, but only the P-38 sweeps flew; therefore I ended up alerting him for no real gain
So this turn, knowing he was going to park as many fighters as he can, I decided to go instead for Samarinda; results were awesome, oil is gone for really no losses, as he probably set all to CAP 0 range
Now the question is what to do with an angry/ alerted Balikpapan
Next turn I will send sweeps, while heavies crater Samarinda airfield, this because it is a level 3 airbase, better if it is at 100% damage

Dec4.42: Sweep battles over Balikpapan
December 4.42
Big battle, big losses over Balikpapan; as you can see, I am helping him get rid of old stocks of Zero A6M2 (which is not the best CAP plane for December 42). But on the other hand, I lost more than a month's production worth of P-38s, which is not sustainable
For night bombing: although there is no HR, I don't want to exploit; so I want to aim for ~50 planes per target; I am happy some oil was destroyed

RE: Dec4.42: Sweep battles over Balikpapan
in other news; I think he plans to bombard somewhere, I would guess it is Dili or Watampone. I will aim for Dili and see if I can intercept, Watampone is in poor shape, so it won't be a big loss if he bombs again

RE: Dec4.42: Sweep battles over Balikpapan
Heavy bombing does not "eat" supplies. You are just using some supplies to send some supplies to the Japanese. It is just that the supplies usually don't arrive in good condition and usually cause other damage as well. Oh well, you tried . . . [8|]
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

Dec6.42: Watampone bombarded
Well I will have a lot more to send to Japan then; with around 100K supply unloading
Dec6.42:
- got confirmation on Yamashiro sinking, which I already kind of knew
- Japan bombarded Watampone, really not a a big deal, as there is barely any supply left, only what the submarines can carry
This means that my naval forces at Miri couldn't catch a thing
- I am hesitant on keep sending sweeps over Balikpapan, as I am seeing lots of Japanese fighters. maybe it would be better to simply destroy oil slowly with night attacks? plus I like the idea of forcing Japan to CAP a single base with lots of fighters

- I am hesitant on keep sending sweeps over Balikpapan, as I am seeing lots of Japanese fighters. maybe it would be better to simply destroy oil slowly with night attacks? plus I like the idea of forcing Japan to CAP a single base with lots of fighters

RE: Dec6.42: Watampone bombarded
Or bomb the air base at night. If you care to risk it, a high speed DD strike with lots of LRCAP.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

Dec8.42: Makassar bombed
December 8.42
I have now a much cleared picture of what Japan had been doing in the Celebes;
basically he has been using his fleet to "fast transport" reinforcements and supply to Makassar, then afterwards bombard before returning to base
Good news for me is that I am in a great position to use Manado's airfield to spoil his plans. And I started this turn with a massive airfield attack that yielded a lot of Japanese ground losses; airfield should be closed in a turn or 2
This means I have to stop my night oil bombing of Balikpapan, which yielded 13 points, I will get back to it once the Makassar problem is dealt
