If you have a base for torpedo bombers within range, then 1000 feet with bombs work nicely.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

Punishing heavy bomber attacks Jorge. Nice work.

Did Japan waste too many Nicks on naval attacks to stop you or does it not matter?

He used Nicks on naval attack when I was invading Dili, I would say, they are OK against freighters/ transports, but not great against naval ships; their cannons won't sink a destroyer and they are not as accurate with bombs, compared to Vals
Vals + Kates + Netties remain the bigger threat.

And he didn't use Nick for CAP against heavy bombers; but they wouldn't been effective because I am within P-38 sweeping range, and Lightnings would mop the floor with those poor fighter bombers

When I was attacking at nigh time, he used A6M3a, and although they didn't shoot a thing, their mere presence reduced bombing accuracy.

I have set many squadrons to ground bomb, 2Es at 6K, 4Es at 10K (as per HR), Makassar (and Watampone) are both clear hex and he is moving, so I hope it will be nasty

my 3 main naval strike bases are Dili, Manado and Ambon. he has wisely avoided them, I don't have supply or working airfields anywhere else in the Celebes

Funny you should say that. Nick is my primary sweeping Lightning counter in 1942 -- it does very well for me.

That's good to know. I'm in Nov '42 and i've been using Tojo II-c up high and Nicks down low and it seems to work so far.

Dec10.42: Ground attacks at Makassar

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

December10.42
Lots of Japanese casualties after heavy bombing of Makassar, airfield is all cratered. port needs to be destroyed too, then hopefully he will start to see supply issues
Intel of troops:
54th Division
41st Field AA Battalion
56th Field Artillery Regiment

If I can keep them out of supply and disrupted, it should be easy to keep Watampone

other news
a naval attack over Manado was massacred by my CAP, one B-17 was destroyed by night attack; I am moving my lone squadron of P-70 night fighters to counter; should be on target in 2 or 3 days
are P-70s any good?

Dec11.42: Heavy bombers saved Celebes

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

December 11.42

2 days of "heavy" bombing humbled Japan and took away the "Yamato spirit" of the 54th division. They are now withdrawing in shame.

I will keep bombing at least until both port and airfield are at 100% damage

And he didn't use Nick for CAP against heavy bombers; but they wouldn't been effective because I am within P-38 sweeping range, and Lightnings would mop the floor with those poor fighter bombers

Funny you should say that. Nick is my primary sweeping Lightning counter in 1942 -- it does very well for me.

I would like to see that!

on paper it is too slow, less well armored, equivalent on durability
a little better on maneuver and climb
Allies will likely hand pick the very best pilots for Lightnings

Maybe with a layered CAP, notice I haven't "visited" Balikpapan after he parked ~200 fighters at that base. I think I won't

with layered CAP, mix of Nicks, Tojos and Zeros he would likely make the bombing runs too costly; I want to avoid that cost, as of now, I am not able to keep the squadrons filled, even when hand picking easy targets, replacement rates are too low

before I get too much into it, I want to show P-70s "Havoc" night fighter war debut

I am happy with the results; even in a thunderstorm, they were capable to shot down a couple bombers, I bet he will stop his night bombing campaign now

Cruiser vs cruiser/ Tanaka vs Callaghan

Tanaka Raizo found Callaghan's TFs; and this time Tanaka was not as aggressive as usual, as he had already spent most of his ammo bombarding Dili
Image

Callaghan was, in the other hand, eager to keep the engagement and pursued Tanaka until both pretty much run out of ammo

End result: one Japanese DD sank, several ships damaged

Air phase:

- Hermes, with USN Avengers on board, scored 2 torpedo hits on Naka and a small bomb on Suzuya, which was also hit by a dud torpedo

- Manado TBs found BB Mutsu on a TF north of Manado, they managed to put some bombs (it was out of torpedo range), he might try to bombard Manado next turn... we will see
