First post, so please don't kill me.

I realize there are several older threads pertaining to the subject of this thread, however, most are around a decade old and there seems to be a bit of contention about the actual effect of losing/conquering oil resources within these threads, and the manual (21.1.5) seems to indicate that oil production can be affected by player actions and the progression of time i.e. Romanian production rate being halved from august 1943 and on.

So, put very simply: As the Germans, does it make any sense to try and go after Soviet oil (Baku) - and vice versa (Ploesti)? And will it make a difference?

No unfortunately.

In the campaign game even though you can stop your opponent producing oil and even capture it yourself, you can never do enough of this to make it a choke point for your opponent. So playing for oil resources either way will make no difference.

It is a flaw in an otherwise fine game.
