Dec19.42: Makassar's naval strike

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

December 19.42
Well it didn't work, or not as well as I was hoping, at least I didn't lose the carriers.
Carriers went east of Kendari and launched one puny strike against destroyers instead of focusing on the merchants. I was expecting his carriers to be out of range, and more or less I correctly guessed where he was going to be (as you can see there are 2 subs on the same hex... but they did nothing)

EDIT: It was in part my fault; I somehow thought 7 hexes was within torpedo range, otherwise I would had set the Avengers to lower altitude

8 DDs there. That would have been a tense mix-up if Ching Lee went there!

followed by a nasty air attack, as you can see he reinforced his carriers with a bomber heavy mix

Tense?

Moonlight is 96%!

Plenty of Allied bases nearby to use.

I don't know how plentiful Allied destroyers are now though...If you go in with just destroyers, several squadrons of 4 dd each say, then the KB won't launch an Alpha strike and you have a good chance of whittling down the IJ air attacks....or you can stand a desron close enough to provoke an IJ air attack, but also close enough to your bases for some good LRCAP.

Lots of different offensive/defensive tactics to try.

I have set something like that for next turn; problem is, it is an obvious move, so probably there is going to be some surprises waiting

that said, I have enough DDs, so I can risk it

Dec20.42: inconclusive DD action near Makassar

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

December 20.42

I sent 3 "disposable" light TFs to Makassar, for a total of 15 ships: 5DD, 5DD, 1CL+4DD

they reach the enemy base in the morning, but they didn't find amphibious TFs, as he wisely withdrew them

Instead they managed to find an attack a small 3 destroyer TFs; results were inconclusive but frustrating, as 3 old Japanese DDs (one of each: Akatsuki, Wakatake, Kamikaze) were able to handle 2 USN DD TFs, each composed of 5 Mahan class DDs.. at daytime [:(] I chose Mahans because of their stronger torpedo broadside, as I was hoping to catch merchants

Mahan class were an improved Farragut class, all were built in the 1930s; of the Japanese ships only Hibiki was equivalent, the other 2 (Kamikaze and Asagao) were second class, early 20s builds [&:]

Anyway, my raiders survived the air attacks, although 2 DDs and Leander is at risk... Of course my opponent is not happy with the air strike results, but I think it was reasonable considering these are agile ships

His Kates would work much better bombing at 1000 feet. I won't tell him. You don't have to.

That goes for your Avengers with bombs as well when going against agile ships and merchants.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

I don't recall though, won't they be on "LOW N" at that altitude? Isn't say, 3K a better altitude if you haven't trained your pilots on NAV B and LOW N?

It's common to train NAV T pilots on NAV B, but also having to train LOW N seems like too much work

Yes, unless he has them trained at LOW N; which is doubtful, it is better to run them a bit higher in altitude. exception to the rule: if the pilots are really green, poor in every skill, 100 feet has the best chances

with Japanese pilot attrition, I would be surprised if his Kates are trained in "bomb" naval attack at all; most likely Kates on torpedo, Vals on naval attack

and he knows, it is just that he had to anticipate to worst case scenario; like if I sent all cruisers, battleships, etc

That's my thinking...as Japan, I've had good luck with bomb-dropping Kates on DDs at 6K, but they were trained in NAV B, as all Kate pilots should be (up to 70, IMO)

I admit I only start training LOW N as Japan in 1943; first for some of the Oscar units, but mostly to start stockpiling for Kamikaze time

I guess you couldn't get any Lightnings over them? Once you get out of 42, I think one of the best use of P38s is to lrcap raiders as their strength as a sweeper is diminished.

Wait till Japan tries to hit late 1944 destroyers....[X(] guess we probably won't get there.[:(]

Any bomber with a torpedo as a main weapon will use that if they are available otherwise they will use the full bomb load - including on Low Nav. As far as accuracy, let me look:
Japanese aircraft
B5N2 Kate x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N2 Kate: 1 damaged

Allied Ships
xAK Siantar, Bomb hits 11, and is sunk

Allied ground losses:
Guns lost 41 (20 destroyed, 21 disabled)
Vehicles lost 36 (14 destroyed, 22 disabled)

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x B5N2 Kate bombing from 1000 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb

I will have to look at another turn for attacks on DDs. But a pretty female wants to lay on my chest and receive some attention . . .

No supply on any nearby airbase, I think I will start developing Tockangbesi-eilanden as it is far enough from his deadly LBAs

problem with P-38s on CAP or LRCAP on small airfields is that their service rating is too high, might end under repair forever

hope it is a two-legged female [;)]

are these guys trained on low naval? you can certainly hit a ship with bombs, specially an xAK, but any ship that maneuvers will have a good chance of dodging if the enemy pilots' low naval skill is low

Here are Bettys set to Torpedo. This is the unit that starts in Bangkok:
Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 4,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 18

Allied aircraft
H81-A3 x 3

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 2 damaged

No Allied losses

Allied Ships
xAK Clan Lamont, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage
KV Fritillary, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
18 x G4M1 Betty bombing from 1000 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb, 4 x 60 kg GP Bomb

If you notice, the CAP did not do much as it was flying too high. One unit was at 9,000 feet the other two were at 11,000 feet and they did not have time to get that low. But the Bettys and Nells are not as good as Kates doing this.

Happy new year 1943!

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

For the second time I reached 1943 in a PBEM!

If I am right, this means submarines are now at 60% dud rate (instead of 80%), and as per HR rules, I can now sweep at 25K

So, not a lot of news, frontline remains static, we are in some kind of quagmire in the Celebes, I can't resupply, he gets bombarded every turn

What else is new? last turn I decided to bomb Miri and Brunei, just to test his defenses, results were OK, some oil hits to distract him

Next turn I will invade Koepang, and there is a 2nd invasion coming in a few days

You look to be way ahead by looking at your DEI map, anywhere eles you are ahead historically on the map? You may not make it in 1944 if you are so far ahead of historical as his major oilfields in DEI are in range of heavy bombers.

Results were OK? Those results vs. Miri and Brunei were excellent. Lots of Oil hits, few losses for you. With all the Oil you've taken or destroyed, all of it should be protected....at least some Oscars or something to break up your bombing attacks

I've said it before, you've made it to 1943, but you won't make it to 1945 in this one, and it won't be because you quit....
