SOLUTION: Smooth Scrolling for Scenarios using Windowed Mode

Post by terry1040 »

I recently started again playing War in the Pacific - Admiral's Edition.

Due to time constraints I mainly focus on playing scenarios against the AI.
Most of the scenarios do not use the full map, but only a portion of it.
In case the actual useable map is way smaller then your display window, the map will start jumping when scrolling.
As I always like to play in Windows mode on my large screens, this typically results in very, very poor scrolling behavior with jumpy maps.

This drives me crazy!!! [:@], but ok it is a rather old game.

Now after a lot of testing, I found the following window sizes being helpful to achieve smooth(!) scrolling of the map.

003 The Battle of the Coral Sea: 1400 width, 1350 height (or smaller like 900)
004 Guadalcanal: 1400 width, 1350 height
In the corresponding command line of the Shortcut to the game you need to put something like this (all other switches of course depend on your individual config):
"..\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -wd -pxf1400 -pyf1350 -skipVideo -archive -deepColor –dd_sw -AltFont

005 The Thousand-Mile War: 1706 width, 1000 height (or smaller like 800)
"..\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -wd -pxf1706 -pyf1000 -skipVideo -archive -deepColor –dd_sw -AltFont

This setting now finally allows for VERY SMOOTH (!!!) scrolling at the edges of the map. [:D]

Unfortunately it seems that it is not possible to achieve full-map coverage within a window w/o scrolling. Please let me know if you found a proper setting for this. [&o] But I am happy the way it is now, works for me. [:)]

I will also update this post with additional settings when I am playing other scenarios with such limited maps.

Cheers
Terry

Ah, I'm quite happy I found your post. It really is more pleasant gaming without the screen jumping around all the time on the smaller maps.

My screen native is 1920 x 1200, and I found slightly different values working even better for me. I just post them so people are encouraged to try what works best for them.

In Coral Seas I set -pxf1500 and -pyf1100 and that is quite comfortable.

It seems to me that the screen is more inclined to be jumping horizontally than vertically. I got the best result when setting the horizontal to slightly lower than what the map appears to be. Vertical I could set whatever (within reason of course) and it was always good.
