Noob question re. SHQs and Zones

Post by Javolenus »

Should each zone have its own SHQ? And if so, is there a particular method for assigning new SHQs to zones? And if you get a minor faction to join your empire, should you give them their own SHQ? Thanks in advance for replies.

No point, each extra SHQ will give you penalty (to PP I think). Build new SHQ only if you will have your regime splitted and there wont be enough Logistic Point to move resources from far-away city to main SHQ.

Each additional SHQ over 1 adds inefficiency to your regime. As your logistics network expands, it also will become inefficient from the high number of pull requests, re-focusing of logistics points at every rail or truck station, and due to distance. Add a new SHQ where your logistics network has become so stretched out that it can't adequately supply your cities and troops.

The new SHQ will act as a fresh supply point for your distant area. You assign zones and OHQ/units to it from the right-hand menu. Ideally, a new SHQ will be self-sufficient in all categories of items so that you don't have to transfer items from another SHQ. Some items have no load cost to transfer, and other items do have a load cost and are therefore limited by your logistics points in how much you can transfer between SHQs.

I've been playing on large worlds and in my current game, I just added a second SHQ 60 hexes from 1st SHQ. I have about a dozen cities in each SHQ. I do create new cities in between cities that are about 25 hexes or more apart, or in areas that are far from any city, especially if the new city would be closer to resources than any other city. I can't say whether or not this is the best strategy.

I do believe it is a good practice to create new zones closer to resources that would otherwise be far away from your other zones. Any assets (including Supply Stations for logistics but not including hex perks) that are beyond six hexes from the city for that zone may start to cause administrative strain, which nullifies the governor's bonus to an increasing degree as the strain increases.

Also, to add, before creating a new SHQ in a city, be sure it has a truck and rail station at least equal to the truck and rail station of other SHQs and nearby cities. Otherwise, you will get bottlenecks preventing you from transferring items between SHQs (as I just discovered).
