Research Question

Post by wobbleguts »

Hi,

Played the game as Japan and then France. Decided to read the rest of the manual before starting a new one.

Pretty much understood everything until I came to chapter 9 - research. I'm pasting the entire section I have a problem with - can someone translate?

At the end of each turn, each invested chit will advance your progress by a
% towards the next level of research.
To achieve level 1 in a research category, the base % progress per chit
per turn is 5% per turn.
The actual per turn increment will vary from 50% less to 50% more than
the % above, with fractions being rounded down.
So, as an example, if you have 1 chit at 5% then you will have a 2 - 7%
increment towards 100% per turn.
The more chits invested in a particular technology area, the faster you
will progress towards the next level. So, if you have 2 chits if researching
level 1 then you will have a 5 - 15% increment towards 100% per turn.
Each chit makes progress every turn from 0-100%, and once you reach
100% you will automatically achieve the next level in that category.
9.2.2. Research Breakthroughs
Once your research has progressed to a 45% threshold, there is a chance
every turn of achieving a Research Breakthrough that will speed your
progress by an extra 10-20% that turn.
The chance of a breakthrough is based on the number of chits invested
multiplied by the % chance of progressing per turn.
190
For example: once you have reached 45% towards level 1, 1 chit @
5% gives you a 5% chance every turn that you might achieve a Research
Breakthrough. For researching subsequent levels, 1 chit will give you a 5%
chance of a Breakthrough per chit once the 45% threshold has been passed.

I thought I knew all about research by playing my 2 games. Thought it was simple. You pay MPP's to research a tech and if you've invested in spying/intelligence you might get desired tech levels quicker.

So what does the above nonsense actually mean? And WTF is a 'chit'?

A chit is a old gaming term for a piece not generally used on the board but for tracking numbers or random draws.

Every time you press the up arrow in a research category you are investing a "chit".

Thanks. So it's saying if if I pump additional MMPs to get a tech to level 3 (ie, click on 1 upgrade then 2/3 if I have the MPPs available I whil get to Level 1 quicker?)

Without having a PhD in the maths, all the above basically says is that you have a random 2-7 % chance of your research advancing when you have a chit invested. The more chits the better, and at the 45% threshold you have the odd breakthrough of advancing up the bar by 10-20 %. Throw in some advances in spying and intelligence catagory and things get even better.

For me, it's just stuff that goes on under the hood. As long as I generally know how it goes and it's consistent from game to game I don't worry too much about the number crunching.

By the way you can de-invest chits in research too. To reclaim an invested chit, click on the “down” button. You will regain 50% of the chit’s cost in MPPs. Some players do this at the beginning of the game to get some MPPS if they see a chit already invested in a category they think is not useful for their style of play. I know a lot of German players tend to de-invest in anti-tank research.

The chits mechanism is used for the game's diplomacy model too.

There were a few changes made for research chits in one of the patches. The maximum number of chits you can invest for the research categories of Infantry Weapons, Anti-Tank Weapons, Advanced Tanks, Advanced Fighters, and Ground Attack Weapons was reduced from 2 to 1.

I don't believe the 45% minimum exists anymore for the chance of a breakthrough. That may have been a relic of the older system where a breakthrough would automatically zoom you all the way up to 100% (which of course proved to be unbalancing).

Note the basic research schema was one example of where the devs implemented a user's idea. [8D]

You're right, the threshold was removed and now a breakthrough merely gives your research a boost rather than automatically taking it all the way to the next level.
