I can feel Mundy's pain with my MTB, they really are some dangerous buggers... that lonely one puts a torp into a heavy cruiser and disrupts the landings so much that again some ships collide, this time also causing heavy troop losses... unfortunately the numbers of IJN MTB are very low...

while the enemy was able to avoid our surface combat group with his slow and huge invasion convoys during the night we finally get an attack during daylight... and again I am totally amazed by the performance of the USN DDs... fully shell prove against our DD gunfire they landed shells on most of our ships, causing enough damage on our DDs that this TF is knocked out... we do hit some of the transports and freighters but mostly target the DDs and finally two were sunk... not an amazing result, I'd even call that an Allied victory as one of the DDs even puts a torp into Mutsu (light damage) and we totally fail to really harm that convoy...

and here's part of the disaster starting... we have roughly 300 land based bombers with the same number of fighters set to nav attack and while there are dozens of enemy convoys around all seems to be focussing on Calcutta which is covered by lots and lots of Lightnings on LRCAP from Diamond Harbour... just makes me laugh, we lose a shitload of aircraft on nav search over Calcutta, spot convoys everywhere and all our LBA totally focusses on the fully defended ships at - guess - Calcutta!!! YES!

the game has one serious problem, it has had since WITP and that are overflows... as soon as high numbers come into play nothing seems to be working acceptable anymore... ground combat, ships, air attacks, make your choice... we spot hundreds and hundreds of enemy ships, no idea how many task forces in total, we have 1350 carrier based aircraft set to attack, another 600 LBA and all seems to be screwed up as we mostly launch pityful strikes against task forces with dozens of ships... seems like the game doesn't know which target to pick and so it fails to pick any of them...

dive ain't the most important factor... radar puts all Lightnings above the Georges and they shred the sweepers during the dive phase that lasted like 80% of the battle... when the dive for the Lightnings finally ended the Georges got a few kills but the end result is way more loopsided than the combat report shows...

three days into the battle it's the first real strike from KB and it clearly shows what the carriers could have done the last two days already... 281 bombers is around 60% of the still available bombers and they really trash one of the big convoys... every APA is worth it's weight in gold and even if we are in 1944 already, losing those is all but nice...

when I was watching my bombers hitting enemy ships I was suddenly thinking like "what?" as a combat pops up showing KB being attacked... the enemy launches 4E bombers from Eastern Ceylon at long range to attack KB... my first thought was nice, free points for us when I had to find out that we are right into a damn kind of overflow already... 553 fighters reported on CAP, exactly NONE in the air? Serious? Some two dozen fighters then attacked the bombers and then the combat STOPPED... I was watching messages like "3 Zeroes joing combat" for about 8-10 minutes until the magic number of fighters reached 553 and then -> the battle was over... OMFG these none working routines... 10 minutes all the game did was like launching aircraft, hundreds in the air but not a single one was attacking the bombers...

just to see them bombing Zuikaku...

that's all fine, no apparent reason for not launching strikes, the same setup has launched strikes en masse before... the only reason I can see is the game not knowing what to do, it's the same behaviour as having a hundred single ship TFs, the game just can't handle it... in this case it's not single ship TFs, but there are so many TFs and ships in total it just totally screws the whole routine, it's not working... good for UV, not so for WITP, not at all for this one... but of coures the answer would be "you are using way too many carriers and carrier based as well as land based aircraft, the Japanese couldn't do that so you do it wrong"...

damn it, perhaps just take out the carriers that come as replacements and I can't use a fleet having 1350 carrier based ac then... or include a self destructive routine so the IJ player can never have more than six operational fleet carriers...

not that the Allied wouldn't have the same probs but hey...

the sweeps severely suffered from the diving Lightnings, rest wasn't really a prob considering the damage KB did today... flak fire from those convoys is all but severe, it's like training runs on all those freighters... if this goes on then the enemy will lose way more he can afford in early 44...

You might want to switch the torpedo bombers to Naval Attack with bombs at 1000 feet if they are going to attack DDs and transports. I think that they get more hits and are more effective that way.

switching Graces to 1000ft wouldn't work, they are all dive bombers. And they do quite well in that role as they carry 2x250kg bombs

there are no dedicated torpedo bombers on any carriers left

Yes. 2x250kg internally at normal range. Or the torpedo hung outside. In real life she could do 6x60kg bombs but i don't think that is reflected in the game. If she could carry a torpedo you would think she might carry something a little bigger than 2x250kg.

The challenge that the devs had with the Grace was that it never got used as a carrier aircraft in the war, and flew very, very few combat missions. the fact that could handle an 800kg torpedo would suggest that a 500kg or 800kg bomb was probable. Catch is that late in the war there were few to none of that ordnance left. 250kg is what the IJ had at war end and that is what the Grace flew with.

In stock the Grace is quite a killer as the 250kg bomb does damage, in Babes not so much due to the reduced bomb effects. It's still deadly against anything that hasn't enough deck armor as you rack up hits quickly due to two chances per attack. I've seen 4 Graces score 8 hits on a single ship in one go, merchants that are usually.

If there aren't heavily armored cruisers or BBs around I even preferre the Graces doing bomb runs.

Last turn was a good day, yes. It could have been an insanely good one though if the bombers would fly. But the previous ones were a joke when you have hundreds of enemy ships around and only get a handful (or even none) of the bombers to attack, for no apparant reason. I'd bitch about no bombers flying if weather was bad, but that's bad luck then and that's it. But if weather is great, you have full sorties, hundreds of undamaged aircraft ordered to attack then it's just stupid and not justifyable. Remember my bombers not attacking his carriers as I had stood them all down? Fully my fault. Totally idiotic orders and totally fail. That's it. Now imagine all bombers were set on nav attack and KB hadn't launched any carriers the whole day with the enemy just sitting two hexes away.[8|]

Pushing them back into the Sea will be the most difficult task in the war so far. He has landed something like 160 units of all kind, some 30 Divisions plus lots of regiments. He must have roughly 10,000 av but I will try to make this his Gallipoli. Or it is going to turn into my Stalingrad.

Ceylon got way over 100 ground units and probably 1000-1300 aircraft. I wouldn't call that vulnerable.

They didn't come from Ceylon. Recon still shows the same numbers across the island and Mundy told me he was shipping all the stuff he landed in the Calcutta area across the map which is quite amazing. He said he didn't want to alert me with my recon over Ceylon. He was sure succesfully with that one.

Ceylon is a fortress.
