and this is where it started to hurt me too this turn... I hoped to knock out Diamond Harbour's airfield with the bombardment but that apparantly didn't work so we had a LRCAP of over 30 Allied fighters over this convoy... KB takes a hit and loses over two dozen aircraft... the Zeke again proving to be garbage, flown by excellent pilots they manage to down 1 Mustang while they outnumber the enemy fighters 1.5:1... kill rate over this convoy 27:1 for the Allied... hitting all those ships was worth it though...
this engagement shows how important it is to knock out Diamond Harbour as an airfield that could cause trouble as our fighters aren't up to fight the enemy CAP...

again, I've never seen such losses before and there is nothing Mundy can really do about it at this point... his carriers are gone (and he did good to retreat them), his airfield at Diamond Harbour is in danger of being knocked out and the spotted BB/CA/CL he has in the area aren't taking part in the battle so far... if they do, I expect some losses even though I hope that IJN night experience will pay off... as soon as his ships engage in combat they will run out of ammo and they can't replenish at Diamond Harbour unless he has brought AKE... if we knock out the airfield, all his ships will be totally helpless against the LBA at Calcutta, further South at Rangoon and KB sitting between Diamond Harbour and Ceylon... only sheer mass of ships might save a good number of them...

and here comes the first assault on Calcutta!! The enemy is able to drop one fort level in our Maginot line like defenses but we don't suffer any notable losses and the attack is bloodily repulsed... BANZAI! I wanted to turn this into a WWII Gallipoli for the Allied and that's the first step towards that... I really feared his first attack even though I knew he wouldn't be nearly able to take the base but I didn't expect my troops to be totally unscatched while the enemy takes such losses... all we need is time to get more units into the area without stripping Western India, then I can't see the Allied having much chance to take Calcutta anytime soon... as forts drop our casualties will go up too though but we still the advantage of being the defender of this urban hex... Stalingrad on the subcontinent...
