Quiet turns, the main development had been the successful unloading of several LCUs at Watampone, I have now 3 infantry divisions, several tanks, combat engineers and artillery on the "correct" side of Celebes and therefore I will start the process of assaulting Makassar

Then the other big news: he finally discovered I had been moving troops on Burma; following advice from this forum, I decided a deep incursion to Ramree island. As you can see from this map, it is going to be captured, and in time built to the maximum allowed

also notice I have tanks moving to Prome.. this is the 7th armored brigade, due to withdraw in 56 days
I might be able to capture it; and not a big deal if they fail or get destroyed, as this means less tanks for Monty!

a surprise Japanese invasion!
I still don't know what he plans to achieve other than more wasted LCUs, but it seems he will do a full scale invasion at the Celebes. He just launched an air assault at Madjene (port 1, airbase 0)

Madjene is 12 hexes from Manado, 6 hexes from Kendari and 2 hexes from Watampone, all 3 important allied airfields.. unless he builds at Madjene and I let him build, his troops will be under heavy air bombing

The plan is to bomb the small port, but to otherwise let him unload
meanwhile 22 Marine regiment and a few other small LCUs will move to Pare Pare
the main effort to capture Makassar (3+ infantry divisions + lots of artillery and tanks) will remain focused on Makassar until the base falls

In the end it was kind of a cakewalk, Makassar fell on the second attempt, even with the enemy naval bombarding (one BB, one CL)

A few more turns to mop up, and then ~35 thousand Japanese souls will be floating on their way to Yasukuni

Obviously the next step will be to repeat on Madjene, which is a level 0 air level 1 port; I won't impede his unloading as those troops that land will be doomed

Enemy spotted so far: 65th Brigade and 11th Division; I have more than 3 divisions + lots of tanks and artillery, should be even easier than Makassar

Are you surprised that there aren't more troops at Paramushiro Jima? I find it hard to believe that by 3/1/43 there aren't significant defenses there.

That was the main reason for the invasion; I didn't see any activity on the Kurils, no airbase or port construction, my submarines were never spotted by naval search, etc

so I was actually expecting to find empty or lightly defended bases, which so far has been the case

I am more worried about Etorofu, as I expect at the very least a much stronger LBA attack when I move there. Hopefully Paramushiro will be captured quickly and then I will have some air support besides old Lex and the Sangamons

That's pretty negligent as Japan to not have bases built in the Kuriles, or even air search. By March of 1943, the Japanese must have these built or Allies can do what you just did. Paramushiro can even be used by restricted IJN groups; as long as it's built up, you can quickly shift aircraft there in a pinch. But obviously he couldn't even do that.

If the Kurlies are empty, it's a good bet the only troops on Sakhalin are the Karafuto Bde.....maybe you can land in Shikuka and take the oil

Landing on Paramushiro does trigger a bunch of Depot Divisions and other land reinforcements, so heads-up, but probably too late in the game at this stage. You're just a few months away from bombing Japan, maybe closer.

as a lesser experienced japan player i always regarded PJ as very important and at least base an Air HQ with Nells and enough INF to make it tough to take. Maybe other japan players aren't concerned about the shorter northern route to the HI.

According to Alfred, it is good for the Allies to get those depot divisions because they will eat supply

Getting the depot divisions early when the Japanese are probably not short on supply, and low on units for internal defense on the Home Islands may actually help the enemy. This also allows them to train . . .

At least in the short to medium term, I am not planning to invade Japan; instead look for opportunistic targets that are undefended or poorly defended
