Yeah, I'm with RangerJoe on this one....it's early, so they are not a burden.

On the flip side, your opponent is way short of fuel and oil, IIRC my back of the napkin was that he had to be down to 1 mil or so stockpile in Home Islands, and falling every turn even without fleet ops. Not good....

Also, on Sakhalin, not that you really need advice....but that Karafuto Bde unit can't be in both Shikuka and Toyohara. But there's rail between them meaning they can get to either fast. I would prep forces to land on BOTH places quickly. That way at least one landing will be unopposed, you'll have a port on the Island, and conquest will be inevitable. He's more likely to defend Toyohara, but you never know....

You probably need to skip full prep on Sakhalin, and just do a quick, messy landing while nobody is there

That was the main reason for the invasion; I didn't see any activity on the Kurils, no airbase or port construction, my submarines were never spotted by naval search, etc

so I was actually expecting to find empty or lightly defended bases, which so far has been the case

I am more worried about Etorofu, as I expect, at the very least a much stronger LBA attack when I move there. Hopefully Paramushiro will be captured quickly and then I will have some air support besides old Lex and the Sangamons

as a lesser experienced japan player i always regarded PJ as very important and at least base an Air HQ with Nells and enough INF to make it tough to take. Maybe other japan players aren't concerned about the shorter northern route to the HI.

Paramushiro can be a bit of a trap for Japan.

Yes, it's worthwhile defending. However, every bit of effort invested into defending it is effort that isn't spent on Hokkaido.

The trick is getting the balance right that makes any invasion before 1943/44 too challenging for the Allies without putting all your eggs in one basket.

The Kuriles need to be treated as a breakwater, the real steel of any IJ NorPac defence needs to come from Hokkaido/Sahkilin.

That's pretty negligent as Japan to not have bases built in the Kuriles, or even air search. By March of 1943, the Japanese must have these built or Allies can do what you just did. Paramushiro can even be used by restricted IJN groups; as long as it's built up, you can quickly shift aircraft there in a pinch. But obviously he couldn't even do that.

If the Kurlies are empty, it's a good bet the only troops on Sakhalin are the Karafuto Bde.....maybe you can land in Shikuka and take the oil

Landing on Paramushiro does trigger a bunch of Depot Divisions and other land reinforcements, so heads-up, but probably too late in the game at this stage. You're just a few months away from bombing Japan, maybe closer.

Alfred (as is often the case) is right, they're not particularly good units and they'll eat a great deal of supply for little military value. Same with the Vietnam militia divisions.

That said, I won't grumble too much should either get activated.

Agreed, Sakhalin is normally very low on the list of places to send reinforcements to for most IJ players.

I'd also advice against dividing your forces for any Sakhalin landing - pick one base (preferably Shikuka for favourable terrain and distance from Hokkaido) and just go in hard. The Karafuto Bde is just a bde, and should be fairly easy to overcome.

Biggest surprise was to find that he garrisoned Uruppu-jima
Etorofu is empty and will be invaded next turn

Lots of LBA activity last turn, I decided to support landing of the closest to Japan (Uruppu) and let the others on their own, that cost me some ships at Shimushiro. Also, I made a big mistake one of the small support TFs and it ended the turn too close to Etorufu, and outside carrier support... end result was a total slaughter

He unleashed wave after wave of LBA attacks, and the results were not pretty; my last USN fleet carrier, Lexington ended at heavy damage state, it is at risk

Well that stinks, but you're still in great shape. You have enough of a foothold there, and down in the SRA, that you can make progress without CV support. Slower obviously, but in the Kuriles you have alot of base building to do anyway

Yes the losses are not too important, I have good chances of saving old Lex, and the Sangamons are good CVEs, but they are still CVEs

I might end losing Etorofu to counterstrike, but the rest are solid positions that won't be easy to recapture

Obviously the Sakhalin dream is over, at least for the short term, I still think I can make it hard for Japan to take resources from there, and the oil will be destroyed as soon as Paramushiro is repaired

I waited to assault in March specifically to avoid the winter conditions, as per the manual it goes from Nov to Feb, I hope it didn't change in a patch

I definitively will keep pushing in the DEI, but we are talking small scale and slow; grab an island here or there, build

And I didn't have a choice with regards to pairing the Sangamons to Lex; or better to say I saw more risk in keeping them separate because sometime TF1 reacts and TF2 won't and that I see as a worse problem

+1 I see the big problem is going to be unloading the current amphibs when the IJ have air superiority, ditto for bringing in reinforcements, including fighters (except maybe the Lightnings which have good range with drop tanks). It will be a while before large enough airfields can be built to accommodate HBs.

Not exactly - Alfred has confirmed that each individual ship being attacked travels at its own full speed. But IRL it would be restricted in movement by having to stay close to the rest of the TF or the formation would be considered less effective because the fast ship is forced out of it to the margins. I imagine that is built into the algorithms somehow.

Yes, the individual ships will break formation as needed but overall, but the TF moves at the speed of the slowest vessel.

Not carrier escort groups, Escort TF as in the sick and dying.

Either way, the CV TF will react while the CVE TF will not - they no longer do mutual support - i.e. CAP is weaker over each TF.
