Hex 158, 83 (Briey Mine)

Post by Chernobyl »

This forest hex can be taken by Germany turn #1. It's an important economic hex because of the mine there.

In hotseat playtesting against myself, I found that as France I could destroy any German unit there (sometimes RNG dependent) even if I place the strongest possible unit there under the best general.

The extra readiness/morale afforded by the Verdun fort makes attacking from that fort extremely potent. Any German adjacent unit is vulnerable.
And I don't think there is a good way to restrict French movements in and out of the Verdun fort without moving a corps to an even more vulnerable spot. So basically France is free to shuffle units in and out of the Verdun fort and annihilate any adjacent German corps, at least until higher level entrenchment is available.

Germany, therefore, has to leave the mine vacant. Is this intended?

EDIT: Not sure why but I seem to be able to hold this hex easily now as Germany. In playtesting, French attacks against it were so costly that it wasn't worth it for the Entente. No idea why it used to be different.

I think this shows the importance of isolating Verdun from the rest of France, as then the French won't be able to launch such attacks on a frequent basis?

Germans can always win if they deploy against the Russian fleet and get free kills. The game balance is broken completely.

Can you explain further what you mean about deploying against the Russian fleet to get free kills?

I would suspect that is in reference to WiE or WaW not WWI.

Hopefully it is as I have implemented something that should help there.

Disregard this post. Somehow the French attacks on that hex are much weaker now. Not sure but maybe the patch somehow changed this.
