Better NATO symbology before Steam release

Post by jimwinsor »

As Vic has stated before, Shadow Empire is currently utilizing a limited set of NATO counter artwork as a placeholder, and that an expansion of this is on the to-do list.

And we players here on the Matrix forum have been pretty easy going and indulgent on this. However, the Steam release of the game is imminent. And as we all know, Steam users, in particular Steam reviewers, do not have such a happy-go-lucky reputation. In fact, when they see, for example, that truck-bound units use the NATO symbol for armored infantry ... they will be MERCILESS.

Therefore I would like to advise that the NATO counter artwork expansion be bumped up in priority. Surely, someone in the vast network of Matrix/Slitherine wargame designers could spot Vic some NATO counters? Below are the units from GG's War in the East, for example:

Ironic you should post this as I have done a lot of thinking on the topic and was about to post similar myself.

In my Nato Symbol Proposal, every formation (i.e., every row in the long table below), should have its own separate .png image that uses the formation name.
e.g.:
MechanizedArmoredAssault.png
LightInfantry.png
MGInfantry.png
etc...

Except for animals. For animals don't use NATO imagery at all - just use the non-NATO animal image

This would allow for a complete set of NATO imagery and enable great flexibility in mod'ing.

Currently, we are limited to these NATO images:

Thanks to DTurtle for his excellent work listing all the formations in SE - that gave me an invaluable jump on this effort.

The Beveled Unit v3.0 mod is as close as I can get with the current unit .png limitations.

Nice expansion on my work :)

A couple of notes:
There are motorized/mechanized infantry formations, they are called Motorized/Mechanized Light Infantry.
The Storm infantry formations were fixed in some beta to be Infantry + Artillery + Light tanks.

Well speaking as a harsh steam critic, that "nato" symbol for an army motorized unit is dead wrong--so don't use that one.

There are three separate symbols for army mounted infantry-- motorized, mechanized, and IFV.

We can for go the correct symbols for friendly, enemy, neutral, etc. and stick with the ubiquitous rectangle.
