Ship Withdrawal, Upgrade and Return

As I keep peeling back the onion and getting deeper and deeper into the detail of this game, a question that has come up is the following.

Do ships that withdraw, and have a future upgrade toggled "yes" and then return at a later date (CV Invincible withdraws in Nov 1942: has an upgrade set for March 1943; and returns in "429 days") return upgraded? Does that just happen off map and behind the scenes...or will I have to facilitate that upgrade on her return. There are other examples like this that I have seen...just can't remember them right now.

If anyone knows the answer to this pls let me know.
