Rule confusion keeping Turkey neutral

Post by jjdenver »

Hi,

39 world at war strat guide says:
"To avoid Turkey taking an interest in entering the war, the Allies should keep units in Beirut, Tehran and Baghdad once these locations are in Allied hands. "

But I don't see Beirut on the map. What city needs to be garrisoned?

Also while I'm on the topic - when trying to keep Mussolini neutral in 39/40 I've moved a unit out of a garrison city (Algiers or Tunis don't recall which) and moved another unit in - but got the Mussolini aggressive reaction message - i.e. the message you get when moving units out (even though I put a unit in the city on same turn. Is there some game mechanic that forces you to leave the same unit in the city or can you switch units in/out as long as city is filled by EOT?

Thanks

Damascus. Thanks for mentioning this, I'll get the Strategy Guide updated.

The engine doesn't check for the exact type of unit, but it will have to be a land or air unit, e.g. a naval unit in the port will not count.

The exact script locations checked are as follows, with the first set of numbers in brackets representing the distance from the resource that is checked, e.g. in Gibraltar and Malta's case just that hex, but for Tunis, Damascus and Alexandria there would have to be no Allied land or air units within 5 hexes for the script to fire.

; UK abandons Gibraltar
#CONDITION_POSITION= 82,60 [0,0] [0,0] [2] [0]
; UK abandons Malta
#CONDITION_POSITION= 103,62 [0,0] [0,0] [2] [0]
; France abandons Tunis
#CONDITION_POSITION= 98,62 [5,5] [0,0] [2] [0]
; France abandons Damascus
#CONDITION_POSITION= 127,63 [5,5] [0,0] [2] [0]
; UK abandons Alexandria
#CONDITION_POSITION= 121,67 [5,5] [0,0] [2] [0]

Thanks - good to know. So the unit that starts in Alexandria could actually move to El Alamein for example and UK would still have a unit within 5.

That is for the Mussolini event. But for the "Turkish interest" event is is correct to say that one unit at the 5 point town 3 hexes west of Baghdad would be enough to prevent Turkish interest since that 5 point town is within 5 hexes of Baghdad and Damascus (assuming there is also a unit within 5 of Tehran)?

That is right. Originally they had to have units in the actual location, but that penalized those who just moved the unit a hex or two, so I opted for a more generous approach to this. [:)]

For Turkey, the scripts check for units being within 3 hexes of Damascus, Baghdad and Tehran, so it's not quite as generous as the Mussolini related scripts.
