Arabian Sea
The MKB arrived within range of Karachi and prepared to send up an escorted strike of Kate bombers. Before the Kates could take off however, a scouting float plane sent back word that a British carrier and its escorting ships were sighted to the northwest. The Kates, loaded with bombs and not torpedoes, took off to attack the carrier instead.
16 Zeros and 39 Kates were met by 14 Martlet II fighters from CV Formidable. The Zeros dealt with the Martlets and allowed the Kates to go on their attack runs unscathed. To the Empire’s consternation however, the Formidable armored flight deck proved, well, formidable, and the two bomb hits that were achieved did not penetrate.

18 LB-30 bombers hit Adak Island to no discernible effect. 8 Oscar fighters were on patrol which helped disrupt their aim.

My opponent has started to actively use his heavy and medium bombers in the Indian theater. Two B-17Ds are shot down when they try to raid one of my tank regiments, but 16 Wellington Ic bombers strike one of my infantry divisions without any trouble near Patna.

Submarines
Dragon pulls out of Cocanada to escape the continued attention of Japanese bombers only two fall into the periscope sights of the lurking I-7. The Japanese submarine promptly sinks the already damaged light cruiser with two torpedo hits.
After the first heady months of the war, this is an example of increasingly rare submarine success. My opponent has largely pulled back his shipping and is becoming increasingly hard to find and target. I have to go all the way to areas like the Arabian Sea to regularly find shipping and these waters are full of dangerous escorts.

The Wellingtons lose half a dozen of their number as they encounter Zero fighters when they try once again to hit the 5th Infantry Division.

These ships however are still within range this turn as the Japanese light carriers launch both a morning and afternoon strike against them. The results are quite good - 2 large and 1 small AS vessels, 2 AGP, 1 AG, 1 large xAK, and two KV escorts are sunk as a result. Not too shabby.

The detection level on Mangalore port spiked a bit with last turn’s Kate raids on the shipping heading there. It appears that there are quite a number of ships hiding out there so I sent in a raid of Kates to do some damage. Unfortunately, the Allies moved in a squadron of Hurricanes and a squadron of H81-A3 fighters. 13 Kates and 3 Zeros are destroyed for only 3 Allied fighters lost in return. Ugh.

36 Nell bombers slip underneath a high flying LRCAP of Hurricane fighters and damage the 7th Armored Brigade near Patna. I am attempting to slow down the brigade to allow imperial forces to catch up with it.

After trying to come up with different plans to speed up the conquest of Changsha, I decided to entice an Allied attack by faking a swap of forces. He knew that a number of my units were battered from the last assault, and I hoped that fact combined with his units starting to run low on supplies in the city would push him to grab at a fleeting opportunity before more Japanese troops arrived to seal the deal. To that end, some local Japanese reinforcements were brought up and started heading into Changsha and at the same time I ordered the bulk of my units within to leave the city. Crucially however, these units either moved out in combat mode or stayed in reserve status.
It worked! The Chinese shock attack and suffer grievously. If my troops had been in move order his attack would have likely succeeded given his significantly superior AV in the city, but he gambled and lost, likely paving the way for a much quicker conquest of Changsha.
The Japanese Army seizes Kienko. All the bases in the Chungking plane are now under Imperial control.

I figure the Chinese garrison at Changsha must be highly disrupted so I immediately launch a counterattack with the forces available. 1 to 1 odds with another 150 Chinese combat squads destroyed are the result with forts being knocked down to 2. I am sensing that victory here is just around the corner.

The MKB has arrived back in the Indian Ocean on its way back to port. The Japanese task force is attempting to circle wide around Ceylon in an attempt to find any more shipping it could target.

Zero fighters inconclusively tangle with a couple of B-17E raids on my advancing troops while Japanese bombers maintain the pressure on the 7th Armored Brigade. Zero and Oscar sweeps over the brigade successfully deal with the LRCAP Hurricanes that my opponent is attempting to shield the unit with.

A Kate strike package is sent up which encounters two large xAP ships, the Empress’ Australia and Empress’ Scotland. A storm of 250kg bombs rains on the two large vessels utterly gutting them. Unfortunately, they were completely empty. My opponent was trying to get them out of the area but failed to spot the circuitous route of the MKB.

The Japanese 5th Infantry Division finally catches up with the harassed 7th Armored Brigade and sends it reeling back with a deliberate attack. The pursuit continues.
China
A Chinese army marched back into Chengtu in an attempt to recapture it (the Japanese Army had moved on to capture Kienko). I did leave a division as a garrison however and this proves too much for the Chinese so they don’t attack. Nevertheless, part of the Japanese army circles back from Kienko with the intention of encircling and destroying this Chinese army.

Thanks! Even though we recently decided to not play for autovictory, I still do care about the points. I know it's very difficult, but I want to see if I can make it to 1946. To do so, I need permanent points and a lot of them at that. To get there though I first have to survive poking the bear.

If locating his merchants is far and few between for your subs you might want to load them with mines to be dropped at strategic choke points and then send them on their merry way to their patrol sectors and see if the mines find a few successes.

I am trying to stock up on naval mines for the Russian adventure but this is certainly a good suggestion to consider, thank you.

The Japanese 143rd Infantry Regiment shock attacks across the river and takes Ledo. My opponent left an engineer unit at the base in the hopes of demolishing some of the oil wells during my attack but luckily only 2 oil wells and 2 refineries are damaged.
On a wider but related note, very few oil wells under the Empire's control have yet to be repaired at this point. Aside from the two at Ledo, only nine oil wells at Miri are still damaged and those are repairing very quickly.

Engine and Airframe Status
Engine productions is going nicely right now with engine bonus currently achieved for the Ha-35 and hopefully in just over a month or so that will also be the case for the Ha-33 and Ha-34. I am also working on getting the bonus for the Ha-32 but that will take longer. The effort to reach the bonus has been done partly by increasing the number of engine factories (currently I have 250 Ha-33, 200 Ha-32, 100 Ha-34, and 300 Ha-35 factories) but also by being very careful not to overproduce any airframes at this stage.
Speaking of airframes, some key highlights are that the Nick A is now in production with 60 factories (It's about time I bring in another fighter to the Oscar Ic and A6M2 mix), and the first Tojo IIa factory cluster is about to start giving me research points. I am also simultaneously researching the A6M3a and the A6M5 with three 30 factory clusters each. For the Russian adventure, I expect to have the Tojo IIa in service to supplement the Oscar Ic with a decent number of Nick As in support as well. For the Navy, I expect to have all participating squadrons flying either the A6M3 (which I will produce in limited numbers) or the A6M3a.
In terms of other types, I will have the Helen IIa (armored variant) in frontline duty but I expect the bulk of the rest of my bombers will still be Sally types, at least initially. I don't expect I will risk light bombers in the Russian operation due to their fragility and short legs, but this may change if the opposition weakens.

This is a quick overview of the past eight game days to bring the AAR up to speed to the big shift in the campaign
North Pacific
I want to largely secure the Aleutians to further push back any Allied effort to assist the Russians so I am preparing some offensive action in this area. Over the last week the KB has been getting into position, and if the weather cooperates, we should have some fireworks here over the next few turns.
South Pacific
The effort to reduce Pago Pago continues apace and the Marine garrison there is showing signs of weakening. I will probably launch a major assault to take the island soon.
India
In India, Imperial forces continue marching forward and secure a few more bases further west and north. The 7th Armored Brigade is caught a couple of times and badly mauled but it eludes attempts to completely encircle it.
A number of skirmishes occur in the sky, and the Allies bring their P-38Es once more into action. For the most part, I successfully avoid them for now. In once instance 10 B-25C medium bombers are shot down by a Zero and Oscar CAP that disperses (except for one unlucky Zero) before the P-38E sweep arrives.

New Opponent!
The AAR is up to date, just in time to announce a significant change with this campaign. My opponent up till now has been very busy with real life (he works in the medical sector so completely understandable) and turns have been a bit slow. We discussed this and he graciously agreed to send his password to a new player with more time to continue the game at a sustained pace.
To that end, Evoken has kindly agreed to step in and take on the Allies. I reached out to Evoken for two reasons. I had previously built a rapport with him when we were considering starting a game together that didn't pan out, and because he has experience with the Russians against the AI and I thought that would be ideal for the rest of this particular campaign.
I fully realize that Evoken is starting off in the backfoot given the disadvantaged Allied position. To that end, I assured him that I am not playing for autovictory and that I will keep my promise to trigger the Russians. I also informed him about my imminent operations in the North Pacific to give him a bit of advanced warning there. We also agreed to a two week armistice in India. This one is rough as it will give him the time needed to prepare his forces and defenses and may remove my chance to take Bombay but I think he deserves the reprieve. I also agreed to spare the 7th Armored Brigade and allow it to escape.
We also made a few adjustments to the House Rules. Strategic bombing is no longer off limits until June 1943 and can be engaged in immediately. We gave Allied warships the ability to carry forces in the same way as Japanese warships, and we can now allow paratroopers to land fragments to capture dot bases.
The AAR is up to date, just in time to announce a significant change with this campaign. My opponent up till now has been very busy with real life (he works in the medical sector so completely understandable) and turns have been a bit slow. We discussed this and he graciously agreed to send his password to a new player with more time to continue the game at a sustained pace.
To that end, Evoken has kindly agreed to step in and take on the Allies. I reached out to Evoken for two reasons. I had previously built a rapport with him when we were considering starting a game together that didn't pan out, and because he has experience with the Russians against the AI and I thought that would be ideal for the rest of this particular campaign.
I fully realize that Evoken is starting off in the backfoot given the disadvantaged Allied position. To that end, I assured him that I am not playing for autovictory and that I will keep my promise to trigger the Russians. I also informed him about my imminent operations in the North Pacific to give him a bit of advanced warning there. We also agreed to a two week armistice in India. This one is rough as it will give him the time needed to prepare his forces and defenses and may remove my chance to take Bombay but I think he deserves the reprieve. I also agreed to spare the 7th Armored Brigade and allow it to escape.
We also made a few adjustments to the House Rules. Strategic bombing is no longer off limits until June 1943 and can be engaged in immediately. We gave Allied warships the ability to carry forces in the same way as Japanese warships, and we can now allow paratroopers to land fragments to capture dot bases.
