Do not put guards units in Guards/Shock Armies?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Do not put guards units in Guards/Shock Armies?

Post by CapAndGown »

page 95:

Soviet non-guards units directly attached to a Guards Army HQ get a +1 to their leader's admin rating provided the headquarters unit is
within its command limits.
Soviet non-guards units directly attached to a Shock Army HQ get a +1 to their leader's admin rating.

Does this mean it is pointless to assign guards divisions/corps to shock/guards armies?

I think the leader who runs these armies gets a bump in admin.

It not that those units in a Guard Army gets a better leader admin check b/c they are guards divisions and other divisions are not. It same bump on all admin checks for that hq.

The last sentence in 7.6.3 explicitly says:

"These admin bonuses exist only as long as the unit is directly attached to the headquarters unit and they never apply to guards units" (italics added)

I try to put non-guards units in Guards and Shock armies since they will get the admin bonuses whereas guards units will not.

I haven’t played this far as Soviets, but putting tank and cavalry corps under these armies is probably a good idea, as they will then more often get full MP. Do note that, if broken down into component divisions, they will also get another -1 to admin and initiative roll range. This makes it possible in some cases to guarantee roll passes.
