[1.06.05] Several second input delay/lag

Post by Prozorovsky »

I have noticeable input delay/lag when playing, most noticeably when on the screen for customizing your flag and while selecting units. Its about typically in the range of one to three seconds but can be longer, its inconsistent as to if it happens or not with each click but it is very frequent.

I'll click a unit, it'll be quite slow, then after say clicking another unit and clicking back on the prior it'll be instant but with another it'll stay slow. Militia seem to have the problem much more consistently.

My feeling is it gets worse with run time as the lag isn't as bad now coming back to it in the morning on the same save but it is still there.

My hardware:
Threadripper 1950x
Rtx 2060 super
64gb ram

Edit: Okay got my phone to time stuff. The delay ranges from a second or two to three or four seconds. The delay effects nearly everything, isn't limited to just units, but tiles, the interface etc. It always happens with militia in my current save. It is for the most part inconsistent.

edit2:

I've tried changing the resolution
Setting cpu priority to high
pinning to a single core

Currently testing out the latest beta to see if the same problem develops.

edit3:

The planet was a small medusa world with severe violence, survival stress, Robinson Crusoe and alien life on.

I do have a save I could upload but I don't know where too, forum doesn't let me and I don't know a good site.

At what resolution/DPI are you playing in game? I remember than a while ago somebody had issues cuz had the incorrect combination

4K with no scaling and I've tried 1080p as well. I recall having some issues with certain combinations, much like I'm having now in this longer going game. A change in resolution fixed the problem then, but doesn't this time.

I've tried cpu pinning and making the game a higher priority but no luck. I'll update op with what I've tried.

What is the size of the planet you're playing on?

Using any scalling option besides the 200% one will cause lag, yeah.

A small planet. The game has been going for quite a while though many of these minors have a lot of militia for instance. And clicking militia is consistently slow.

Starting a new game seems help a lot, clicking militia feels almost instant, maybe just a slight delay there but much better. It looks like this issue gets worse the longer the save goes. Normally I would expect turn times to be a growing pain not input delay.

It's like the game is checking over every militia when you click one, longer the game goes the more militia to go over when you click.

Did not find a clear answer in above exchanges... how is it going on 4K resolution + 200% DPI mode ?

best wishes,
Vic

Also a test that could be useful is lowering the bottom part of the interface (the arrow down button) and see if it makes a speed difference.

Hello. Sorry I didn't make things clearer should have specified I've tried different dpi's as well.

The problem is very much present regardless of resolution or dpi. Could be several things feeding into each other.

Run time seems to make it worse, so rebooting the game helps a bit, but only a bit, maybe a placebo.

The longer the save goes, the worse it gets. Starting a completely new game does not have the issue, even on much larger planets.

Militia in particular almost always have this issue in at least my save.

Lowering the bottom bar doesn't seem to do anything.

Made a short video for youtube to show the issue at 4k no scaling, 4k 200% and 1080p no scaling... And I can't post links, well, uh, "Prozorovsky" on youtube, vid called "Shadow Empire Delayed Input". Made it public.

Threadripper 1950x
Rtx 2060 super
64gb ram
But is it actually running on that GPU?

Modern CPUs often have a weak GPU integrated. And both can put in work at the same time. Deciding wich Executable is run on wich GPU is generally left to the beter ones control programm (but I think Windows 10 started taking over somewhat).

SE is afaik run on the Integrated GPU, as it is basically just a Windows Forms application. If taht integrated one is missing drivers, it would fully explain the delays.

Shouldn't be a problem, CPU has no GPU. Unless the game is running entirely on the CPU and doesn't touch the GPU in the first place.

Game runs entirely on CPU.

Send me that savefile to vic@vrdesigns.net please , in case it is related to something completely different.
