Allies Squad Upgrades - Can you skip a step?

Hello all, I have a pretty straightforward question with regards to Allied squad upgrades.

Assuming it is the middle of 1943 and you still have a unit full of USA Rifle Squads that for some reason or other you neglected to upgrade to USA Rifle Squad 42s. Are you able to directly upgrade this unit to USA Rifle Squad 43 standard or must you first have enough Rifle Squad 42s to upgrade to before then upgrading to 43? In other words - can you skip a step?

Thankfully this is not a problem I am currently facing, but wanted to give this example so that I can better understand this gap in my knowledge of how upgrades work.

You can go directly to 43 squads.

Yup, you can.
Provided you have enough 1943 squads in the pools, supplies, HQ, etc your basic 1941 can upgrade directly to 1943 squads. Your old 1941 squads will be returned to pool - but as 1943 squads already.
