CV not attacking sub?

Post by squatter »

Can anyone explain why my CV cannot attack this sub?

Weather clear. One OP left. Naval attack activated. What am I missing?

Running latest v09

Thanks

The sub is not in a coastal hex

The new sub-hunter rules disallow CV direct attacks on subs. Instead, CVs can be positioned on convoy lanes and add a percentage to the escort for convoys. Thus an indirect attack.

And as OxfordGuy3 said, subs can be attacked directly when they are in a coastal/shallow water hex.

Thanks guys. Makes sense. I prefer more abstraction of the sub war.

Minor thing, but manual isn't completely clear on this. The wording isn't clear whether carrier air is 'air' or 'naval' in this instance. The word 'other' doesn't help.

"Only air groups or escorts protecting a convoy route may target a submarine group in any hex type. Other naval groups may attack a submarine group only if the submarine group is next to a hex that is not all water."

air groups refers to land based air groups, strats, close, tacs on Naval bombing mode.
Other refers to all Naval groups not escorts (CV, BB, etc...)

I'm not so sure I care for the new sub rule. On the plus side there is a lot less micro management. Beyond that the subs appear to be more lethal. Especially since you can't chase wounded subs down and try to kill them. I don't have any stats though, so I can't be sure.

Fair enough, but that's not fully clear to someone reading the manual
