Old Grudges Never Die

Post by Eboreg »

So I had a lot of disposable money lying around after Christmas and decided to get a good share of LIVE scenarios that I had passed over earlier. The first one is "Old Grudges Never Die" and the first thing playing this scenario informed me of was the need for a WCS doctrine for guided missiles. I had to edit the scenario to make sure none of the sides fired at any guided weapons in order to not provoke hostilities too early. My first (two) playthrough(s) were as Turkey and I, quite frankly, did not have a lot resources. I wanted to bomb some Kurds but I just didn't have any valid reconnaissance assets in order to do so. I decided to settle for bombing the ISIS structures near my border with dumb bombs and a smattering of stand-off munitions. I also re-armed my F-16s to carry more AMRAAM heavy loadouts while still allowing the ones that were ready to take off in order to defend friendly rebels. They did so by buzzing Russian attack helicopters and strike jets in order to make sure they were more worried about their own hides than providing CAS for the Kurds.

After a while, I started getting indications of Russian cruise missiles flying over Turkish airspace but ignored them for the time being. That is... until the Turkish government started flying off the handle about this. While negotiations were inevitably breaking down, I decided to intercept the Russian cruise missiles by routing my Vipers to the north of their patrol zone and manually allocating AMRAAMs to the cruise missiles they got in range of. Pretty soon, the government gave me clearance to open fire on the Russians, which was just as well because I was bringing my submarine to the Moskva that the Russians had in the area, you know, just in case I had to shock and awe the Russians into submission. I brought my remaining Vipers that still had AMRAAMs into range of Russian SAMs and managed to shoot down some of their reconnaissance assets including a UAV while the Coalition joined in the shooting. I was getting a little worried because a Russian helicopter was hovering over my submarine but the Coalition managed to shoot it down. In hindsight, sending in the Vipers was probably a bad idea when the Russians had a f'king S-400 in the area, even if it didn't have ARH missiles. I only lost 6 Vipers to this area.

Meantime, my frigate managed to sink a Russian Buyan with 4 Harpoons and my submarine shot 2 Harpoons at the Moskva from point-blank range crippling it. I then decided to follow up with 2 Tigerfishes but overestimated the damage that the Moskva had suffered and it managed to get away. Swearing under my breath, I then decided to send 4 Phantoms at it each armed with glide bombs but that didn't work out to well. Finally, I managed to let loose on the Moskva from even closer with my submarine and finally managed to sink it causing the international community to immediately step in and ask for a truce. While I lost more fighters thanks to a slight rush of s*** to the brain, the Russians lost quite a few High-Value Assets and even two ships making this a sound Turkish victory. I ended with a Triumph and a score of 166 points.

By the way, there was no way I could have saved the bridge belonging to the friendly rebels.
