simpler questions

Post by wobbleguts »

Went through the production stage - Found out that the Barbarous scenario doesn't have the optional production rules anyway so I learned the oil rule but couldn't use it!

Anyways, carried on and have the following 3 questions. Firstly, I had a load of disorganized units from the first turn. Once the production phase was finished the sea and air units are green again. Is this done automatically depending on oil points? I didn't see the entry that's on the tutorial production table that tells you how many points you need you need to re-organize units. Haven't got to the land units yet, are they re-organized as well?

Secondly, I am now up to to the STR bomber phase. Is there a way to remove units from the map so you can see the resources? I've tried but can't find it anywhere.

Thirdly, I have this problem in Finland....

You can start a new Barbarossa Scenario with all optional rules you want, including oil. Or are you using the saved Fast Start .gam file?
If you play without oil, then yes, all your units, including land. are automatically reorganised during EoT.
The toggle button displaying a counter below the Command drop-down menu let's you choose to show units or no units on map.
What is your problem in Finland? If it is about supply, you would need either an HQ up North or maybe a line of consecutive CONV from Baltic Sea Arctic Ocean.

As you can see my Finish units are out of supply and I don't know why. The infantry are adjacent to russian units but the naval etc are in a Finnish port but still have no supply. Why? I notice part of the railroad to the port is in red. What does that mean?

Finally, what does FB mean on coastal hexes? Tried looking it up but can't find an answer. Seems to be important though.

1) during turn end all units are being reorganized automatically. If oil rule is used, there is oil use -phase when you reorganize ships, planes, tanks etc. You can see oil needed hovering mouse over unit.

2) you remove units from map clicking 7-4 button in top left corner. The one that is fourth from left.

3) units need city or HQ next to them to be in supply. Or port and convoy line. Finns need HQ to north. It cannot be railed, there is only road for resource, not rail line.
If your attack is going really well, it's an ambush.

The continuation of the Finnish railroad running north in brown is a road, not railroad. Road can be used for transporting resources, but not units or for supply purposes.

FB means Finnish Borderlands. Rybauchi Peninsula is ceded to SU after Winter War.

A road CAN be used to trace supply. You just need a HQ that can use the road, just like a railroad needs an HQ. For supply purposes, roads and railroads are identical. If the Finns want supply in the north, they must put their HQ there. Units can trace to the HQ, and the HQ can trace along the road to a Finnish city.

Only HQs can use roads and railroads for supply. Units must trace back to a city or to an HQ that traces back to a city. A unit can use a convoy chain to trace back to a city.

China also has a lot of roads.

That explains it.

As you can see, I have some air units patrolling the Baltic sea. Do I have to re-assign them or will they continue patrolling till the end of the turn?

The answer to that one is - both. Units at sea at the end of a turn in the 0 box must return to base then. All other units in boxes 1-4 can return to base, OR drop down one box and remain at sea.

The Germans could effectively defend their convoys, if necessary (rare), by using a ‘Naval Air Interception’ move if a Russian unit in the Baltic were to initiate a search. That way, the Axis could use their air missions on land.

Units on a naval air mission stay there through the whole turn, unless you voluntarily return them to base or to a lower sea box, or unless they are aborted or shot down as a result of combat.

At the end of the turn, units on a naval air mission are given the option to either return to base or stay in the sea area, sliding down one sea box. If they are already in the zero box, they must return to base. Ships at sea are given the same two options, except that convoy points (CPs) are always in the zero box, and may stay there or return to base.

Neutral major power's units at sea, except CPs, must return to base. A neutral major power's CPs may stay at sea.

That makes sense. I wondered why my units moved to different sea boxes. Now I know. Do convoys stay out indefinitely (in box 0) unless they are damaged?

As long as they are on "sentry", yes.

They are allowed to, yes. It is common to put them on sentry so that they will stay there automatically. Be warned that if the enemy attacks them, sometimes they will go off sentry. Usually they don't, but sometimes they do. Always check! If they have gone off sentry, put them back on. It is infuriating to have to redo the return to base phase -- the most tedious phase in the game -- because all the convoys in the North Atlantic decided to go home without you being aware of it.

If you don't want a convoy in a sea for some reason, you can always voluntarily return it to base. It is not stuck in the sea area.

Ok, I got another question(s). Started a new game of Barbarossa with the same options as the fast start game plus extended game turns.

Now that I know the basics, it is going a lot better. However I am still confused by some of the phases. At the end of a turn phase I get a Prod Plan prelim screen. Can't seem to change anything in there but that makes sense. If I try to save oil etc it says I don't have that optional rule enabled which I understand. When I click proceed I get the same form for USSR and they can't do anything either. All ok.
It then jumps to a stay at sea phase. That one confused me as well but I think I've got it sorted. When I click proceed from there I get a new Prod Plan screen but this time it says Final rather than prelim.
Have no idea how I got here or why my oil points are now being used without my say-so. Same for USSR. Can anyone explain?
