Update option not working
Hi,
After installing the game, I used the 'check for update' in game option and it worked fine for a few weeks. Now, when I click the button I get 'Error: update information for WIF could not be downloaded'.
Apparently this is a common problem. What is the fix?

RE: Update option not working
You need to contact Matrix Support. The update programs/processes are theirs and they use the same system on hundreds of games. They should be able to figure out the solution for you.ORIGINAL: wobbleguts

Hold on, not really splendid news, more a bit promising. When I bought the game it worked for the the first few tries, then failed repeatably. After posting the problem, a few weeks later it started working again but then it failed at every try. Worked yesterday, will try again tomorrow...

RE: Update option not working
Hi,
For me, it sometimes work but mostly doesn't. That's why the problem is confusing. If the update NEVER worked, I could check the PC firewall settings etc to see if it was being blocked. (I did anyway and it isn't). The fact that it works occasionally suggests a matrix server issue. Each time I start the game I try and check for updates. Just tried and it doesn't work (again).

Today it worked. Strange.

Sometime in the last few years, I invented a mantra: Computers are strange.ORIGINAL: wobbleguts
Today it worked. Strange.
Accepting this fact slightly reduces the amount of stress in one's life.
I thought I knew how to play this game....

Computers are not strange. They just do as they are told. It's the coders and project managers that add the strange factor and they are the only people that can fix it.

What is it that works and not works? There are no daily updates. This is not Turbo Tax.

The check for update option on the first screen works sometimes but usually doesn't. Obviously I'm not expecting a daily update. I just want to check if there is one. See top of this thread for error message.
Today it worked again. I think that's 3 days in a row so maybe it's been fixed.

You don't have to check for updates. If there is one, it will be announced in the forums here by Matrix.

Agreed and that's how I had to update my game (because the Check for Update button didn't work). So i started a new game, checked the version number, closed the game and went to the forums. I found a new stable version (there was a beta one I didn't want). Then had to install dropbox, upload the update files to dropbox, download them to my pc and move them again to a different PC location. Not much of a problem, but it would be easier if the single click Check for Update button actually worked.
Also will point out that the Check for Update button is the 2nd button on the games main menu! The fact it hardly ever works is not a good look.
I'm just saying there is an important button on the main game menu that doesn't work and should be fixed. When you click it, 95% of the time it says 'Error. Contact Matrix Support'. Well I've done that and the response is 'don't click the button it doesn't work.' An interesting response but it doesn't inspire confidence for a new player. New players just want the buttons to work. Am I wrong?
Anyway, here's my update on the check for udate news. It worked for 3 days straight and I thought it was fixed, but then failed again with the same error message. Hasn't worked for 3 days now.

RE: Update option not working
Perhaps I should have explained things better. AFAIK Matrix has set things up so that only the public releases are going to be available by update. The history of this game's development is that there have been many public beta releases, but few public releases. Most people are willing to use the public betas and essentially are assisting in beta testing.
Yes it's a bad thing the button does not work, but I am only offering reassurances in terms of whether or not you are missing out on something.

You have already explained your views and I don't need any reassurance because I can work around the problem.
Are you still saying the problem is due to the fact public (tested) releases are rare - you suggested it earlier as well. This is just plain false. When I installed the game it was V3.02 (I think). Played a game, used the update button and it didn't work. But a newer V3.2 was available via the forums. To re-cap I did the following to install it... I found a new stable version (there was a beta one I didn't want). Then had to install dropbox, upload the update files to dropbox, download them to my pc and move them again to a different PC location. Not much of a problem, but it would be easier if the single click Check for Update button actually worked. So there was a newer public release available. The problem is the server, not the availability of a new release.
The point is that the 2nd button on the main game screen menu hardly ever works. It is supposed to check the server to see if there is a newer public release available. If there isn't, it should give a message that you are already running the latest version (and it does when it occasionally works). However, it doesn't work most of the time because of a server issue and it's embarrassing for Matrix. Developing an AI but can't even fix the 2nd button on the main game screen menu. That's a worry.
This is real basic stuff. Forget all the waffle about beta versions you think the community prefer and look at the issue. The 2nd button on the main game menu is supposed to check if you have the latest version and it doesn't work. Why not? Simple question.
Works occasionally, mostly doesn't. Update: Didn't work today again. That's 4 days in a row.
That is all i have to say on the matter. Pointed out the problem and will leave it there.

RE: Update option not working
If I understand it well, Paul says is that the BETA 4.xx is not offered to download because it's a beta. So it's not strange that I could download 3.XX and later no 4.XX BETA.
Then, the hotpatches it seems thet are not included in the Matrix Web downloading page so you need to use them from the forum page. That goes as usual as well.
I have read you a couple of times writing on dropbox et al, but I had no need or at least dont remember to have had to install dropbox at all, I just clicked on the linkm, then they offered me to register. This puzzled me, but then I saw a small icoon with a symblol like a download. So I clicked on it and it just downloaded the file. I think, because the explanations of the download were so scarce, you made too many steps and a not needed dropbox registration.
