RE: Off Topic. Showing off my wargame collection
I think some titles were sold off individually along the way, so I just Googled this idea - shoots....scores!
A new edition will be published later this year!

Found enough room in my new closet for my wargame collection that I started in the early 70s.

@CL55AMG, I'm envious! Nice collection. What are those "An Historical Simulation" games on the right side of your first cap?
Also, out of curiosity, why do you have two copies of VG's, "The Civil War"?

Doesn't Hasbro own the rights to all of Avalon hill games? They were the ones that bought them.ORIGINAL: brian brian
I have always thought VitP would make a pretty good game to play via mobile OS “app” but dunno who owns it now.
Yeah, AH was was bleeding cash back in the day, so they brought the rights to Axis and Allies to get a cash flow. It wasn't enough, and Hasbro brought them for that title. What happened to the rest of their titles I've no idea.

The Historical Simulation games are the old SPI games from the 70s.

The "An Historical Simulation" games are boxed (not sure "boxed" is quite the right word) editions of games that first appeared in the Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) magazine Strategy and Tactics.ORIGINAL: rkr1958

Reminds me of my first real job of being above ground like in whack-a-mole, talking to my neighbour on the other side of my cubicle wall and mentioning that I had been waiting 4 months for the next edition of a a bimonthly magazine I subscribed to. "oh", he says "you mean S & T".
Having moved to a new city to take the job, I was overjoyed at finding a fellow wargamer.

That is my favorite unplayable game [8D] I hope to computerize it. I did a lot of coding on the SPI variant 'War in the World'. A combination of SPI's 'War in Europe' and 'War in the Pacific'. Similar to WiF except on division/brigade level and 20 nautical mile hexes. The map is only of Europe/North Africa, not nearly as nice as MWiF.
I had to take a break from coding and get a real job to finish raising my daughters. I just retired recently and I have time to devote to WiF and my coding. Installed the new compilers and brought up my code a couple of months ago.
I wrote a nice anti-cheat monitor that prevents email players from repeatedly restarting a saved game from an opponent after a randomization or hidden information is shown. If there is a problem, your opponent can send you another saved game with a new randomization seed. Your opponent will then be aware of your multiple restarts. If it happens too often and his play or luck seems too good, suspicions may be raised.

RE: Off Topic. Showing off my wargame collection
I really liked VG’s Civil War and keep a half an eye out on a games sales group for a copy to buy. But could probably buy one whenever I wish on ebay and have never got around to it. I liked the random leader setup option. If they drew Stonewall Jackson in Missouri, they had a decent chance to control the Mississippi, and then maybe the Federals would be through, as Steve Earle put it.
I have always kind of wanted Stonewall in the Valley but I like the Richard Berg system used for the Great Battles of the American Civil War series; I think SITV pre-dates those. I have spent some time in ‘the valley’ and had a jobsite on Cedar Mountain one time. It is pretty neat to drive around on a wargaming map and be able to see the major geographical features.
I recently picked up SPI’s Winter War, mostly to frame the cover I think.
A new publish of Victory in the Pacific is still in its Kickstarter funding phase. I forget the name of the group doing it. They have a website.

I didn't get too immersed in the game as I didn't have opponents by then, but it was the best Civil War game I ever played. Of course that is JMHO. YMMV.
The most intense was TSS (Terrible Swift Sword), although a huge game, it still had an exciting feel.

I bounce back and forth between VG's 'Civil War' and SPI's 'War Between the Sates'. They are both fun to play.
I liked the combat system in TSS. It seem to model civil war combat pretty well.
Those games cry to be computerized on played online.

There was a computer game called Battleground Gettysburg that played exactly like TSS, but I can no longer remember the publisher. Might even have been a DOS-vintage game, but it was very well done.

John Tiller's Battleground Series games. I have most of them. You can download them for free at
https://www.old-games.com/search/?s=battleground
One of the parts of the TSS combat model missing from Tiller's game was the ability of the defender to retreat before fire. I understand why he left it out for play ability, but it did change the way the game played.

You might be referring to Strategic Studies Group's (SSG) 'Decisive Battles of the American Civil War'. I have Volume 2.
Using a program call 'Dos Box' I have been able to get most of my old DOS games to run with Windows 10. I've have the 'V for Victory' games, Avalon Hill's 'Third Reich' and a few others. Those games ran very slowly in the 90s because the computer hardware was slow. With today's computers and the DOS emultaor the games run great.
You've sparked my interest. I've pulled out the old copy of SSG's game and will see if I can get it running on windows 10 with Dos Box. I still have a computer with a floppy drive to load the game software [:)]
