A rule of thumb for area size and number of air planes?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

A rule of thumb for area size and number of air planes?

Post by Novaliz »

Is there a rule of thumb for example for the numbers of scout planes for a specific area size: like X scout planes for x hex area size for a good recon?

not really ...

as so much in this game its situational. The trade offs are:

You won't get high recon in rough terrain or poor weather.
Say you are planning an offensive knowing where something is maybe enough - you don't really need to know what it is;
Say you plan bomb a Pzr division into the ground, you need high recon on that hex
Combat triggers recon, so later missions work better than earlier bombing missions - so you can for eg give a set of bombers an order to bomb airbases, after the first round of missions, the AI will disregard empty airfields and later missions will go for the subset that have planes
the one plane type the Allies lack (both tactical and strategic) is recon, so you are using a finite asset.

Really the test is how vital is it that you have total knowledge. If it is, at least a couple of formations, very small area, 4 days in a week.

If you are fishing - are their axis units around Rome? Then one formation, large area, 2 days will give you what you need.

If you are worried about what the axis have in the mountains and/or poor weather, well no degree of commitment will get you much recon, ground contact is the only way

In general don't use recon assets for more than 3 days a week, ideally 2.

I still have a question left. What is the difference between a stratetic and a tactical recon?

Strategic recon is of targets that Strategic bombing can hit, specifically industrial targets as well as ports and railyards. Tactical recon is of targets that Ground Attack can hit, such as airfields, units, railways, ferries, and interdiction, as well as the aforementioned ports and railyards.
