Quick Question about SUs

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Quick Question about SUs

Post by Novaliz »

When doing a deliberate attack, my units can be supported by SUs of the CorpsHQ. Can they although be supported by SUs from the ArmyHQ, when the checks went fine?

No.
SU attached to Army HQ can support units subordinated to Army HQ only.
Attaching SU to this kind of high HQ is a good way to refit them (if the unit is on a well supplied depot) but not to fight with them.

Make sure that you have your SUs properly distributed among your combat HQs at the beginning of each turn.

I like to go to the Command Report, click on the HQs tab and go to the Support Level, click on it and set the level to 0. After that, filter the HQs by clicking on "none" and then selecting "HICom". Set the Support level to 9. This will make sure that as each turn ends your SUs flow UP from the Corps HQs.

This allows you to more easily transfer SUs within the same chain of command down to your combat HQs and therefore does not cost any AP.

See page 126 of the manual for combat use of SUs

The Wehrmacht that set out to conquer Russia in 1941 was a poor army with strictly limited resources.

My personal preference is to Lock Support so that the AI doesn't decide how to allocate support units, I do it.

1. Assign all field artillery units to corps HQ, as they don't help in battles otherwise (unless you have ground units directly assign to army HQ which I never do).
2. Move High Command HQ's to national depots like Birmingham (UK Homes Forces), Sheffield (SHAEF when it arrives) and Oran (AFHQ) and transfer weakened support units that need to refit to one of those HQ's.
3. Put army group HQ's on the largest repaired depots/ports you can find in Italy and Northern Europe, and when your damaged support units recover, and when you get reinforcements, you can assign them to the army HQ's and from there to the on-map combat units directly the next turn.
4. I don't assign any support units to army HQ's except for AA units.

It never costs AP's to assign support units to combat units or transfer them back to HQ's. It does cost to assign AA units to cities and transfer them to new cities.
