Needed: Anti-submarine warfare for dummies

Post by pfg1701 »

Can’t sink a German sub to save my like. I tried right clicking on them with every ship in the British Navy and all I get is a message that I can’t occupy the same space as an enemy. Tried right-clicking with shift, alt, ctrl and just about every other key on the board and got no change. Tried putting my ships next to the sub counter and got nothing. Tried anticipating where the subs will show up next and still accomplished nothing but a nice, quiet cruise for the sailors.

Tried beefing up escorts. This reduced my merchant ship lose but did nothing to sink the elusive subs. Also tried attacking them with bombers. This at least got a “searching” message rather than the annoying “don’t crowd me” message, but, in the end, the bombers couldn't even kill a fish.

What am I missing here?

Sub in raider mode and in a convoy lane:
1)Place escorts on convoy routes they sink subs
2) Place CVs and DDs on convoy routes, sub hunter rule.
3) If close to shore and within range, you can use air units to attack subs.
4) sub near a coastal hex can be attacked by anything, air or naval.

Doesn't investing in convoy escort advancements only increase your own convoy escorts? The only tech that helps with the sub war is the detection, and that works only for bombers if I'm not mistaken.

What I'm seeing in my PBEM games vs Allies is 2-4 small ASW Fleets made up of CV's and/or destroyers and placed on a convoy route or staying around a couple of hexes from a sub, although I think they only have to be within 24 hexes of the sub. That and 10 escorts per route seem able to hit subs decently.

Does investing in detection help?
I know it will help for air units built specifically for Anti-Sub but they are marginally useful because of cost and range.
I don't think it does anything for escorts and sub hunters including CV's.

I don't think so too. But convoy escorts tech will help you.
