FITE2 BULGARIA ENTERS THE WAR

Post by loveman2 »

Hi does anyone have any idea what would cause the Bulgarian army to enter the war on the German side in 1941. I can see no reference in the Game notes to say Bulgarian army can join the Germans in the war. The Germans have taken Sevastopol and I am guessing this has activated the Bulgarians. Anyone any ideas.[&:][&:]

Bulgaria never entered the war against the Soviets. They declared war on the UK and US but not the USSR. Their leader, Tsar Boris, considered his army ill equipped to fight a modern war and conscripts poorly motivated to fight far from home. Not sure why they would even be in the scenario since they just took part in anti partisan and occupation duties in the Balkans. [&:]

I read somewhere (it may be apocryphal) that when the Germans were approaching Moscow in 1941 some Soviets put out peace feelers via Bulgaria- as they were still on friendly terms with both sides.

The Bulgarian response was to shoot the Soviets down on the basis that Russian victory was inevitable.

IIRC that was Georgy Dimitrov, the Bulgarian (Communist) head of the Comintern, not anyone affiliated with the Bulgarian government.

There you go- not entirely apocryphal then.

Not sure why they would even be in the scenario since they just took part in anti partisan and occupation duties in the Balkans.

They fought the Germans on the eastern front in late 1944-45. Served in Hungary and Austria. Not sure if that is part of the scenario map.

I am currently besieging Sevastopol in a FITE 1.9 game. I am trying to hurry to get bulgarians to join the axis. They seem to have 6 rather weak corps. On par with some of the Weaker soviet armies.

After reading up in the subject I feel that it is a bit "gamey" to send them to the Slaughter House on the eastern front.

Maybe the designers intended to add a Yugoslavien partisan front to the scenario, but never got around to it?

If you start messing with the Bulgarians it becomes a...uhm...mess. Then you have to include the Bulgarian Communist partisans. I don't know how much partisan warfare is included but once you start down that road you might as well make a whole new scenario about the partisan war in the Balkans. [;)] After Bulgaria surrendered to the Soviets they did fight the Germans in the Balkans and one army ended up in Austria in May. Would be a nightmare to get the whole Balkans mess right.
