Well, China literally threatened war if Taiwan declares independence. Well, Taiwan already is independent so...

I think at this point it should be abundantly clear that if China wants to occupy Taiwan then no-one is in a position to stop them without a nuclear exchange, which is not exactly a win-win. However China needs trade with the outside world much more than the outside world needs trade with China, and I'm not certain they're quite ready to complete their journey to becoming an international pariah just yet.
