11th-13th December 1941

Central Pacific

Aircraft Carrier raid had started. Two separate TF’s CV Enterprise’s under VADM Halsey and CV Lexington commanded by VADM Brown showed in force near Maloelap Island. At first no enemy ships were detected and carrier air force bombed enemy base. At second day recon detected few small transports, but weather was too poor to prepare successful attack. Both TF’s moved west to find more valuable targets

By 12th and 13th more naval targets were detected and air attack commenced. Unfortunately there was no targets of real value.
On 12th Australia Command informed CINCPAC that Japanese carriers decreased it’s activity over Asutralian Targets and by 14th they confirmed, that they had no enemy contact since day before.
Based on that CINCPAC decided to withdraw carriers to southeast. There is no real reason to risk them and mission was successful. Japanese carriers group left Australian coast and ships.

On 12th of December, admiral Kimmel decided, that part of his battleship force should me moved closer to Australia.
BB’s Maryland, Pennsylvania and Arizona, supported by CA Minneapolis and CA San Francisco moved out of Pearl Harbor without incident. Unfortunately 120 miles south of Hawaii’s I-172 discovered US fleet and attacked USS Maryland. One torpedo hit. Damage is minor, but it was decide that ship will go to San Francisco for repairs. Rest of the fleet will continue their mission.

Australia Command

11th December brought to Australian fleets continuous attacks and bigger loses by the hand of Japanese pilots.
But on 12th attacks decreased and by 13th no enemy presence was recorded.
There is big hope, that Kido Butai is leaving the zone.
Good news is, that after days of hunting and many bomb hits CA Canberra survived in Melbourne port. Ship will need serious repairs but hopes are high.

On other news several Japanese invasion was lunched on North Guinea Sector. Enemy was stopped at Kavieng. Japanese soldiers were held back by Australian garrison, but HQ expects that their will surrender in day or maybe two.

Image

USAFFE

Japanese soldiers captured Davao on Mindanao Island.
At Luzon they are moving from two sides. Air war brings big losses to Japanese Naval bombers, but it is clear that new Zero squadron appeared and will sweep remaining allied fighters.
Additionally two squadrons from Manila will be withdrawn south to DEI and later to Australia.
B-17’s from Luzon bases, stared Miri Strategic bombing. RAF from Tarakan supports US pilots with neede recon to increase bombing targeting.

Image

Borneo

Japan continue invasion on northern bases. Every available transport plane is being diverted to rescue engineers from encircled bases.

Image

Malaya

Light Carrier force leaved Mersing and moved East. Their mission might be replenishment in home bases, but also there is possibility that they will try to support invasion on unknown Allied base on Luzon.
On the way Japanese Light Carrier group met convoy with supplies from Hong-Kong. It was decided to load supplies on Hong-Kong and move it undetected to Manila. Mission could be success but unfortunately enemy decided to withdraw his light carriers. Now British convoy is being bombed.

Enemy also after cutting supply lines to Singapore discovered plans to use George Town as evacuation port for northern troops. Using sweep mission of Zero and Nate fighters and over 100 army bombers he destroyed port and airfield. Only way out for now is by Float Plane. Last ship with evacuated troops was sunk by submarine north west from George Town. There was no survivors.

Image

Summary

Malaya is lost, but also Philippines, but they will hold longer. Only good news is that KB left Australian Coast and also big losses of naval bombers.

Intelligence claims that prewar numbers for Betty bomber pool is 20 and he lost 53 already. Nell reserves should be in better shape pool was 76 and losses are 45 planes, so pool is not depleted yet.

Also US Army can praise it’s first official ace in World War II. 2LT Irvin B.S. gained 5th kill over Manila in his P-40E Warhawk.

This early, it would be best to keep your carriers hidden so the Japanese can be surprised. You let the enemy know where they are. Keep training the carrier pilots, they need it.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

That is what 4Es and long range PBY torpedo planes are for. [:D]

Look at what Lowpe is doing as Allies.

Now, later on, if you really want to get a lot of posts and freak your opponent out, just show a picture of a tree with a description. Someone did that to John 3rd and got 6 pages of comments before the next turn was run. John 3rd was getting a little nervous . . .

14th-16th December 1941

Central Pacific

ASW hunting never ends. Enemy without remorse is using subs to harass shiping around Hawaii’s. However on 15th December naval search planes discovered corridor that could help evacuate damaged battleships to San Francisco. Unfortunately corridor was only illusion. Near Lahaina I-4 had chance to attack USS Oklahoma. One torpedo hit target and ship is now heavy damaged. He might survive, but there is no safe road to Pearl Harbor. Ship will seek safe port in Hilo Base.

Supply ships arrived to Wake. Admiral Kimmel decided to send there two B-17’s squadron. Airfield there is to small to fully operate however Airforce claims that they can bomb Kwajelin port from there.
In the same time mines was placed in waters surrounding island, so enemy should have few additional problems when he will try to react to port bombings.

Malaya

George Town is being flattened by enemy planes. There is no chance that evacuation could be continued from this place. The only way to escape from there are flying boats. Squadron of Flying Tigers was send to Taiping (nearby undamaged airbase) in last way to create air cover over George Town, but Zero figters, showed superiority over american pilots.

ABDA decided to send second smaller squadron to support admiral English.

Borneo

Strategic bombings of Miri brings more fires and destruction on oil fields. Intelligence claims that enemy loaded and send his troops to invade Kuching. Light carriers force was identified with support of surface task forces. ABDA High Command decided not to intervene.

Burma

Air war over Rangoon. Japanese fighters and bombers are attacking port and airbase in Rangoon, but British HQ in cooperation with american Flying Tigers squadron and 67th RAF Squadron decided to put CAP over city. Biggest battle took place on 15th of December

Southwest Pacific

On 15th Kido Butai was detected heading north east near Guadalcanal. It is not known, what is their target. It might be replenishment in Truk or Kwajelin or they might try to hunt US carrier fleets. Carriers are being withdrawn to the safety.

On 14th December search float planes from Pago-Pago detected two Japanese AMC ships. As the purpose of this fleet was clear naval air patrols on Pago-Pago and Fiji was put on alert. Naval attack orders were issued but on 14th and 15th December there was no attack at all. It was clear that Japanese commander wish to attack transports unloading troops and supplies at Suva port. Convoy was protected by heavy cruiser Pensacola, but as we can see that was not enough.

This unnecessary losses enraged CINCPAC. There will be consequences for local air force commanders and also admiral Kimmel's is planning to intervene with Commonwealth High Command and demand resignation of commander of New Zealand’s Task Force. According to press in US all the losses was because they didn't get to Suva in time.

You have way too many ships in that Surface Combat TF. You want an aggressive commander but if you want to harass the transports, set the TF aggression to "Low" so your ships won't play with enemy Surface Combat TFs (SC TF or SCTF).
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

17th-20th December 1941

Hornets nest they call it. Operation to send B-17 bombers against Kwajalein from Wake. Only biggest optimists could expect success and as always they were mistaken. B-17 flew to enemy port, met CAP, one B-17 was shoot down and they completely missed target.

Two more damaged B-17’s didn’t returned from mission.

But nest was buzzing.

On 18th few naval bombers attacked Wake Island without success. By that time B-17’s squadrons were send to Southwest Pacific, because high command didn’t believed that second raid will be more successful then the first one.
At same day Catalina detected Japanese TF. Only identified ship was APD, so 4 DD’s that protected supply convoy detached from it and started naval combat patrol. In the same time near Ocean Island recon planes detected Japanese Carriers heading northeast. Buzzing was louder and louder.

On 19th naval bombers came once again protected by night. Naval recon didn’t detected APD’s but north of Kwajalein, Catalina reported big TF. Crew claimed that they see 4 BB’s, but it was clear for anyone who tracked Japanese carriers, that this TF is Kido Butai.
Decision was made to hold DD’s naval patrol and wait for 3 more DM’s that will arrive full speed and place additional 120 mines in waters around Wake. Transports will withdraw to Pearl Harbor.
CAP from marine fighter unit will try to protect destroyers and resign from protecting airbase.

Medan airbase will be evacuated, but there are plans to defend Palembang and prepare support airfield to south west from it.

Also one Indian brigade will support defense of this base. Also there might be possibility that British brigade will also land on Sumatra.

Celebes

Air attacks from Manado are crippled by air defense in Davao or Ternate. More ships are detected, so it is clear that enemy is planning to attack at least Manado itself under air support from Ternate. So Allied naval Task Force bombarded this base.
Night Naval bombardment of Ternate at 78,102

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed on ground

Allied Ships
CA Houston
CL Boise
DD Encounter

Engineers: 2 destroyed, 4 disabled

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 20
Port hits 5

Additional attacks are planned.

Summary

Sumatra will be probably next field of battle. I still on fence here. Is it wise to commit Indian and British brigade to slow enemy down. It might be impossible to build bigger fortifications in Palembang, if my enemy quickly captures Singapore and will slow fortification effort with bombers.

Attack on Manado is imminent I will not commit to much forces there.

Intelligence claims that enemy is preparing his big fleet in Truk. I already know that 4th division is there or might be on the way. Also 21st division from Shanghai will be there. Parts of 55th division (144th Regiment) will be there too.

21st-25th December 1941

Central Pacific

Japanese carrier group arrived with support of invasion forces. Wake quickly fell into Japanese hands and minefields were useless. Kido Butai sunk 3 DD's from naval combat patrol and hit few transport ships passing by from Philippines.

Southwest Pacific

Ocean and Nauru Islands. No other moves detected.

Malaya

Philliphines

All US air cover was withdrawn.

Sumatra

Celebes

Ternate naval bombardment mission ended when Japanese Navy placed a trap at port. Recon detected 2 battleships, so allied forces withdraw.

Summary

Conclusion of first phase of war is closer. Only Java and Celebes are clear from Japanese presence. But according to intelligence it is some kind of mystification.
Intelligence detected at least 2 divisions heading to Truk. One of them places Townsville as it's target.
Also Intelligence claims that another division will arrive to Babeldaob. I believe it could be part of Invasion forces of Darwin.
I got info that 12th division is planning attack on Anchorage, but it is hard to believe in this phase of war that politicians will allow this division to leave it's current post.

26th December 1941

Philliphines

Japanese forces surprised by Allied counterattack

At first, IJA tried to check Allied positions near Cabatuan just north of Manila. 194th Tank Battalion put a splendid fight even though he was outnumbered by enemy. Lack of anti tank weapons might be a problem for Japanese soldiers.

Sumatra

After capture of Palembang Allied troops are withdrawing to Ooosthaven. Partially unloaded Indian brigades were loaded back on the ship and brigades sailed back to Australia.

Japanese cruiser task force moved south under protection of carriers but didn’t managed to capture transports.

Unfortunately torpedo bombers from Oosthaven armed with British torpedoes from Singapore didn’t launched their attack.

Task Force was dispatched north to intercept Carrier Battlegroup unprotected by battleships.

The 65th brigade has a lot of infantry firepower but not a lot of stamina because it does not have the supporting devices like a division has. It is air transportable and that is where it can shine.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

I hope that it will convince Japanese High Command, to redirect division to Philippines instead invasion of Australia.

Not necessarily because the invasion bonus is not over, he already is on Luzon, and Luzon can starve into submission. Feed it with sub supply.

Sumatra

Japanese naval forces moved north, so TF Friedell found no enemy, only weak air raid.
Japanese sweeping raid cleared sky over Oosthaven. Unfortunately lack of Aviation support made lots of fighter unavailable. High risk of loosing many grounded planes.

Southwest Pacific

Enemy carriers detected near Truk. APD force detected heading southeast. Possible target? Guadalcanal.

You need to park your DDs and not worry abut ASW until:

1) The DD crews get trained.
2) The DDs get better ASW weapons.

Until then, just use your air units to find them and hopefully damage them, route your task forces away from them.

I hoped that they will gain experience this way without risk. But I see that I made mistake.

Southwest Pacific

Three Japanese Task Forces detected. At least one of them is Kido Butai. Naval recon detects them near Rabaul. It is clear that this is first invasion target. Other TF detected many miles to the east. It might be Guadalcanal invasion force.

Almost all reinforcements unloaded at Port Moresby. One squadron of P-40Bs created CAP over base.

US land forces are close to Nonumea, Luganville and other ports in region, but it will take at least week more to fortify and claim empty bases.
